Apple announced a visual redesign called Liquid Glass, set to debut with macOS 26 Tahoe. This design features transparency effects in context and dropdown menus, system controls, and the Control Center, where elements exhibit a glass-like quality. The dock allows icons to have varying translucency, with options for classic, dark, clear, or tinted versions. However, some inconsistencies exist in the beta version, such as tinted icons lacking transparency. The glass effects are present in many of Apple's apps, with navigation panes on a glass-like surface and floating menu buttons that are translucent. In comparison, Windows Vista's Aero Glass was noted for its impactful use of transparency in title bars and window borders, creating a sense of depth and enhancing user experience. Although Apple's Liquid Glass is meticulously designed, it may come across as too subtle compared to the more pronounced Aero Glass effects. The impressions of macOS 26 Tahoe are based on the initial developer beta, and improvements are expected before its public release later this fall.

The latest update to the Phone by Google Android app features a larger display of the caller's name and phone number at the top of the screen, requiring contacts to be saved for identification. The caller's photo has also been enlarged. The app now uses oval-shaped controls for functions like mute and speaker, while the answer call button remains circular. The "Call from" text has been removed, and the other party's number is visible after answering, with the call duration repositioned to the top of the screen. A new animation showcases the caller's profile picture. These design changes aim to improve readability and user experience.

Android 16 QPR1 has introduced design changes and user interface adjustments, but a bug has emerged that prevents newly installed apps from appearing on the home screen, despite the relevant setting being enabled. Users can find this setting by long-pressing the home screen and navigating to home settings. The bug is considered minor, as newly installed apps remain accessible through the app drawer. Google is expected to address the issue in a future update, but no timeline for a fix has been provided.

Microsoft has redesigned the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), which has been part of the Windows operating system since 1990. The new version features a black screen instead of the traditional blue, with a simplified message stating, "Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart." This update is currently being rolled out to Windows Insiders, and during testing phases, the screen will appear green. The redesign aims to create a more user-friendly experience, but some users find it more intimidating and confusing due to its resemblance to the Windows update screen. The updated BSOD is available to users running the 24H2 version or newer, with plans for a broader release in the coming weeks.

The Steam Deck OLED is an upgraded version of the original Steam Deck, featuring a superior OLED screen with enhanced brightness and quality, despite a resolution of 720p. It supports a wide range of Steam Deck Verified games, providing a seamless gaming experience with minimal restrictions, although some modern titles may experience slight performance issues. The device allows for gaming in various settings, making it convenient for users to access a vast library of PC games. The hardware includes robust analog sticks and an improved cooling system that operates quietly during intense gaming sessions. However, battery life can be limited, especially with demanding games, offering only a couple of hours of playtime, which is less than competitors like the Nintendo Switch OLED. Recharging is facilitated by a USB-C port, allowing for the use of portable power banks.

Microsoft has delayed the rollout of the Recall feature for Copilot+ PCs, shifting the expected launch to December, as confirmed on October 31st. The Super Resolution feature for the Photos app was announced on October 1st and made available to Insiders last week. Microsoft is encouraging users to transition to Windows 11, offering an additional year of security updates for consumers and a more expensive Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for businesses. A redesigned Windows Hello experience has been introduced for Insiders in the Beta channel, featuring new icons and a streamlined design, though performance concerns remain regarding the speed of facial recognition sign-in. Managing passkeys has been made easier, but switching devices and creating different passkeys can still be complex for users.
