Russian Hackers ‘Targeting Messaging Apps,’ Dutch Spies Say

Russian hackers are targeting messaging applications used by Dutch officials, including WhatsApp and Signal, as part of a global cyber campaign. They aim to infiltrate conversations of high-ranking officials, military personnel, and civil servants. Hackers are using tactics such as impersonating the Signal Support chatbot to obtain security credentials and exploiting the "linked devices" feature to access messages. The AIVD warns that this could lead to significant privacy and security breaches. Peter Reesink, director of military intelligence, cautions against using these apps for sensitive communications, echoing a Pentagon memo advising against the use of Signal due to threats from Russian hackers.

Meta is shuttering Messenger’s standalone website, which is a thing that exists

Meta plans to discontinue the standalone Messenger website in April, redirecting users to facebook.com/messages for desktop messaging. Users can restore chat history by entering a PIN, which can also be reset if forgotten. Many users have expressed dissatisfaction with the removal of the website, especially those who deactivated their Facebook accounts. This decision follows the discontinuation of Messenger's standalone desktop applications earlier. Messenger originated as Facebook Chat in 2008, became a standalone app in 2011, and was integrated back into the Facebook app in 2023.

Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10 in October 2022, prompting users to consider their next steps, especially those with PCs that do not meet the requirements for Windows 11. A desktop built in 2020 with an Intel Core i9-9900 CPU lacks a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0, which is necessary for Windows 11 eligibility. Microsoft encouraged users to invest in new hardware rather than upgrade existing systems. However, there are workarounds available for users with compatible machines. One method involves using the third-party program Rufus to install Windows 11, which requires an empty USB thumb drive with at least 8GB of storage. The installation process includes downloading Rufus, obtaining the Windows 11 ISO, and following specific steps to bypass TPM and other requirements.
