A week with Googlebooks: four notes from our testing so far

My favorite open-source Android screen mirroring app is now way faster

Scrcpy 5.0 is a lightweight, open-source tool for screen mirroring Android phones to PCs, released by developer Romain Vimont on GitHub. Key features include: - Native hardware-accelerated video decoding, reducing desktop CPU usage by up to 10 times. - Improved input latency due to offloading video decoding to the graphics card. - Enhanced audio capture capabilities, allowing capture of all audio streams. - Official native Windows on ARM64 binaries for Snapdragon-powered laptops. - Bug fixes and refinements, including improved video buffering and resolution of keypress dropping bugs. Windows 10 Users Face a $30 Choice as Microsoft Quietly Extends Security Support to 2027

Microsoft has extended the support cutoff for Windows 10 from October 13, 2026, to October 12, 2027, due to a one-year extension of the consumer security program. Devices enrolled in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program will continue to receive updates automatically. Unenrolled devices can still enroll until October 12, 2027, to receive critical updates released since their support ended on October 14, 2025. Users in the European Economic Area can access ESU at no extra cost but must maintain a Microsoft account to avoid losing access to updates after 60 days. To qualify for ESU, devices must run Windows 10 version 22H2 in supported editions, have the latest updates, and meet specific criteria. Microsoft 365 Apps and OneDrive on Windows 10 will receive updates beyond ESU, but the operating system itself remains unprotected without ESU. As of August 2026, 25.15 percent of Windows desktops in Germany were still using Windows 10. Users can check their ESU status under Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update.

Windows update leaves some virtual desktops staring into the void

Microsoft has acknowledged an issue affecting some Windows 11 users utilizing virtual desktops, where a black screen appears after sign-in, requiring manual launch of Explorer to regain access. This glitch is linked to devices operating on the August 2026 non-security preview update or later. It has been predominantly observed on Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) hosts using FSLogix, with crashes of Windows Explorer noted in the Application event log. A temporary workaround involves using Task Manager to initiate explorer.exe as a new task. Microsoft has implemented a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) via Group Policy to disable the problematic change until a permanent fix is released. Versions 26H1, 25H2, and 24H2 of Windows 11 are affected, while Windows 10 and Windows Server do not appear to be impacted.

Windows 11 KB5124010 update released with 46 changes and fixes

Microsoft has released the KB5124010 September 2026 non-security preview update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, introducing 46 enhancements, including improvements to Bluetooth functionality and the ability to remap the Copilot key. Other highlights include the ability to use slideshow wallpapers across multiple desktops, enhanced gesture controls for precision touchpads, and a Camera roll backup feature for OneDrive. Microsoft has fixed a known issue with the File History backup feature and removed the PC-to-PC Migration tool, recommending Windows Backup instead. KB5124010 is the last preview update for Windows 11 24H2, which will reach end of support in October 2026.
