Destiny 2 Renegades results in a generous surge on Steam, but even Star Wars mania can’t bring back the highs of my favorite FPS

This figure, however, is below the over 100,000 players achieved by Edge of Fate and trails behind previous expansions like the Witch Queen, Lightfall, and The Final Shape, which surpassed 290,000 players. Player feedback on Renegades has been mixed, with a Steam user score of 59%, categorized as 'mixed,' and some complaints about microtransactions. Despite this, early impressions have praised the new buildcrafting features, narrative quality, and cinematic cutscenes.

Destiny 2 has “not reached expectations” since Sony acquisition, posting loss of $204 million

Sony acquired Bungie for approximately .6 billion in 2022, with about one-third of the investment aimed at retaining Bungie's workforce. Bungie has been operating independently since the acquisition. Sony's CFO Lin Tao announced a ¥31.5 billion impairment loss related to Bungie's intangible assets, reflecting a reassessment of Bungie's value due to underperformance in titles like Destiny 2 and Marathon. Despite this, Sony's overall sales and operating income increased by nearly ¥42 billion compared to the previous year. Tao noted that player engagement and sales for Destiny 2 have not met expectations since the acquisition. She reassured stakeholders that the goodwill associated with Bungie remains intact due to the strength of other titles in Sony's portfolio. Tao acknowledged potential risks for Bungie's upcoming releases and the ongoing performance of Destiny 2, stating that failure to meet expectations could lead to further impairment losses, but does not currently foresee these challenges affecting Sony's overall gaming segment health.

Bungie shows Marathon proof of life with the announcement of another closed playtest

Bungie has announced a closed playtest for Marathon, scheduled from October 22 to October 28. Players can apply for an invite on Bungie.net now, with access requests through Steam opening on October 13 at 10 am Pacific Time. Participants must agree to a nondisclosure agreement. The playtest will focus on improvements made since the alpha, including three maps, five runner shells, prox chat, re-tuned combat pacing, solo queue, and deeper environmental storytelling. The Technical Test build is still a work in progress and will only showcase a portion of the final game. Destiny 2’s latest game-breaking bug: Players can no longer respawn in solo activities… Like, at all

Players are currently unable to respawn in Solo Ops activities after dying, and this issue is being investigated by Bungie. The respawn button is unresponsive post-countdown, forcing players to exit to orbit or switch characters to rejoin. This bug also extends into Patrol zones, although self-revival is sometimes possible. Additionally, the exotic hand cannon Sturm is providing an unintended +380% damage boost, leading Bungie to disable it in the Trials of Osiris PvP mode while allowing the bug to persist in PvE. Bungie has paused non-critical balance fixes, but Sturm is considered a critical issue. There are several known issues, including players being killed immediately upon respawning in specific activities and engrams dropping at lower Power levels than advertised. Bungie's community team has expressed frustration over the ongoing issues and their impact on player trust. They have also allowed players to earn a previously paid armor set as an in-game reward.
