From GDC: Building the Next Generation of Xbox

Windows Server 2025 Native NVMe: Storage Stack Overhaul and Benchmark Results

On December 15, 2025, Microsoft announced native NVMe support in Windows Server 2025, marking a significant evolution in data management and access. The new architecture replaces Disk.sys with NVMeDisk.sys, allowing direct communication from the filesystem to hardware via StorMQ, eliminating latency and enhancing performance. Write operations showed modest improvements. A registry modification is required to enable this feature, and caution is advised due to potential complications with NVMe drives when deduplication is enabled.

Windows 11 Moves Closer To Android App Continuity

Microsoft is enhancing Windows 11's cross-device capabilities, allowing users to transition Android app activities to their PCs. This feature enables users to resume activities like music playback, document editing, and web browsing directly on their Windows computer. Initially limited to OneDrive activities, the functionality now includes resuming Spotify playback, editing Microsoft Office documents, and restoring browsing sessions from mobile devices using Microsoft Edge. This feature has been in testing since August and is included in the latest Windows 11 Release Preview update. The approach is similar to Apple's Handoff feature. The update also includes expanded support for MIDI 2.0, improvements to voice typing, enhanced fingerprint sensor compatibility for Windows Hello, and broader language support for the new Settings Agent.

Microsoft unveils two new Windows 11 recovery tools: Cloud Rebuild and Point-in-Time Restore

Cloud Rebuild enables complete reinstallation of Windows 11 from the cloud for devices with persistent issues, using the Intune portal for selection of the Windows release and language. It employs Autopilot for zero-touch provisioning and streamlines user data restoration through OneDrive and Windows Backup for Organizations, reducing downtime significantly. Both features will be integrated into Microsoft Intune in the first half of 2026, allowing remote recovery actions and management of Windows Recovery Environment functionalities. Additionally, Microsoft is testing an updated version of Quick Machine Recovery (QMR), which helps resolve Windows boot failures without physical access. QMR engages the Windows Recovery Environment during boot failures, analyzes crash data, and allows Microsoft to implement remote fixes. The latest version improves the boot-repair process by conducting a single scan to resolve issues.

Android Auto to gain video playback, games, web browsing

Video playback will only work on supported apps and compatible cars, and the user's phone needs to be running Android 16. Android Auto will get Spotify Jam and support for video apps and web browsers
