The Digital Content Observatory has reported a significant increase in digital blackmail cases linked to instant messaging applications, driven by the rise in their use across various age groups and a lack of awareness about associated risks. Blackmail schemes often start with fake accounts that engage users and escalate to threats demanding compliance under the risk of exposing personal information. Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram are favored for these activities due to their private nature and encryption challenges. The Observatory emphasizes the importance of raising awareness, especially among younger users, advising caution in sharing personal information and encouraging the reporting of blackmail attempts. They highlight the need for improved digital literacy as a preventive measure against unsafe digital practices.

Microsoft has warned about the increasing use of PDF attachments in cyberattacks, particularly during the U.S. tax season. Attackers have been using PDFs with embedded links that redirect users to counterfeit pages, such as a fake DocuSign site. TrustWave SpiderLabs has identified a new campaign involving a fake payment SWIFT copy that leads to a malicious PDF containing obfuscated JavaScript, which downloads a script that conceals the RemcosRAT payload using steganography. This technique involves hiding links within images, making them difficult to detect. The latest attacks begin with phishing emails containing malicious PDFs that direct victims to harmful webpages, facilitating the delivery of RemcosRAT, a trojan that allows remote control of compromised systems. Users are advised to be cautious of emails labeled “SWIFT Copy” and to delete suspicious emails immediately.

Epic Games has adopted a relaxed stance on the moderation of thumbnails created using artificial intelligence, focusing on compliance with established guidelines rather than the tools used for creation. Dan Walsh, the product management director, stated that the company is more concerned with whether thumbnails meet their rules than with the methods of their creation. He noted that detecting AI-generated content will become increasingly challenging. In contrast, Epic Games maintains strict ethical standards for its own first-party content, ensuring that all generated material is properly licensed and ownership rights are respected, as emphasized by executive vice president Sax Persson.

A working group has been formed under the Ministry of Digital Development to localize The Pirate Bay on the "GosTech" platform, involving government, industry, and copyright representatives. A vice-premier will lead the group, addressing challenges faced by Russian citizens since 2022 regarding access to foreign entertainment. The "Gosbukhata" initiative aims to provide access to international and domestic films, with local companies and channels willing to upload content. Filmmakers have concerns about user fees, and a draft of a new Presidential Decree outlines the process for acquiring rights from copyright holders in unfriendly countries. Users of torrent software will need to register with Roskomnadzor and pay an annual fee of 500 to 1000 rubles for access, with fee distribution managed by the All-Russian Copyright Holders Union. Additionally, VK plans to launch a domestic peer-to-peer multimedia content exchange platform named "RuMul" by 2025, currently in the sigma-testing phase.
