New Windows Zero‑Day Flaws Target Defender and BitLocker

Nightmare Eclipse drops claimed BitLocker bypass for Microsoft Windows

Nightmare Eclipse has released a new zero-day vulnerability exploit called GreatXML, which allows unrestricted access to BitLocker volumes on Windows systems that have previously run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Turn off Windows Search indexing: Windows Search consumes resources and may perform poorly. To disable it, access services.msc, stop Windows Search, and change its Startup type to Disable. A Reddit user experienced issues after reinstalling Windows, as two of their drives became inaccessible due to BitLocker encryption activating without consent. BitLocker can slow SSD performance by up to 45% due to the CPU handling continuous encryption and decryption. The software version of BitLocker differs from the hardware OPAL version, which offers better performance but does not enable automatically. BitLocker does not activate automatically for users upgrading from Windows 10 to 11. The affected user may need to wipe the drives to regain access. Users are advised to regularly check and disable BitLocker if unnecessary and to document encryption keys and back up sensitive data.

How to transfer your Windows 11 setup to a new hard drive — no extra app required

After installation, users can restore the previous Windows 11 installation from the system image backup by booting from the USB drive and selecting "System Image Recovery." If the new drive has unallocated space, users can create a new partition or expand the existing setup partition. To create a data partition, users can access Settings, navigate to Storage, and create a new volume from unallocated space.
