Windows 7 was launched in 2009 and was known for its reliability and user-friendly interface. Windows 8, released in October 2012, marked a significant shift in Microsoft's approach by prioritizing touch control and eliminating the classic Start menu, which alienated desktop users. Windows 7 introduced features like Libraries and Windows Media Center, many of which were removed or obscured in later versions. Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 in January 2020. Windows 10, launched in July 2015, reintroduced the Start menu and offered a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 users. Windows 11 was launched on October 5, 2021, with stricter hardware requirements, including TPM 2.0, which excluded many existing PCs from upgrading. The evolution of Windows reflects a trend towards integrating Microsoft services and subscription models, diminishing user autonomy. Support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, pressuring users to transition to Windows 11 or consider alternatives.

Quantic Dream has announced the discontinuation of its multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), Spellcasters Chronicles, just three months after its launch due to insufficient audience engagement for long-term sustainability. The game peaked at 888 concurrent players at launch, which quickly declined to very few active users. The studio will halt development, likely leading to layoffs, but will continue work on Star Wars Eclipse. Players can access Spellcasters Chronicles until June 19, after which the servers will shut down, and all expenditures during early access will be eligible for refunds upon request.

Microsoft is making significant updates to Windows 11, including enhancements to the WinUI framework for improved user experience and a new rollback feature for drivers to prevent system crashes. The Xbox brand is rebranding with an all-caps style, reducing Game Pass prices, and discontinuing the "This is an Xbox" campaign while focusing on Project Helix. Windows 11 is also set to introduce a Low Latency Profile feature for better performance, particularly for gamers. Logitech's MX Master 4 mouse now supports native Windows 11 haptic effects. However, the Surface line remains stagnant, with outdated products compared to competitors like the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x, which offers better value and performance. The size of Windows 11 updates has increased, with some reaching up to 5GB, attributed to various factors including artificial intelligence.

Avast Antivirus is a widely used security tool for Windows, macOS, and Android in the U.S., functioning primarily as a real-time malware scanner that protects against threats like viruses and ransomware. The free version for Windows includes on-access scanning and web-shield protection, while paid versions offer additional features such as a firewall, ransomware shield, and VPN. On macOS, it focuses on malware detection and web protection, and on Android, it includes app-permission monitoring and device location features. Avast has faced criticism for its data-collection practices, particularly its past monetization of user data through a subsidiary, Jumpshot, which was discontinued in 2020. Despite improvements, it still collects telemetry and usage data. Avast is suitable for users looking for an easy-to-use antivirus solution at low cost, particularly those using Windows PCs for everyday tasks. However, it may not be ideal for privacy-conscious users or those with older hardware, as it can slow down system performance. Avast competes with other antivirus providers like Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, and Kaspersky, each offering various features and performance levels. The company is a subsidiary of Gen Digital, which consolidates multiple cybersecurity brands, and its growth potential is influenced by user retention and regulatory scrutiny. Users should weigh their priorities regarding cost, privacy, and performance when deciding on antivirus solutions.

Google has launched the Google Health app, rebranding the existing Fitbit application, but it will phase out several features that longtime Fitbit users relied on. The badge system will be completely removed, and users will lose unique usernames, profile pictures, direct messaging, and community feeds. Child profiles will no longer allow adding friends, and the weekly leaderboard will only focus on steps and cardio load. In health and wellness, minute-by-minute stress check graphs will no longer be available, and detailed skin temperature data will be replaced with daily and weekly trends. Users cannot set calorie targets through food plans anymore, although they can set macronutrient goals. Recipes for Google Health Premium users will also be discontinued, and daily fitness plans will shift to weekly ones. Sleep features will be reduced, with the discontinuation of sleep profiles, monthly sleep animals, and the Estimated Oxygen Variation (EOV) feature. Premium subscribers will now use the Health Coach for personalized sleep responses, and snore detection on certain devices will be eliminated. The app will maintain compatibility with Health Connect and Apple Health but will no longer support connections to Lifescan devices, affecting users who monitor blood glucose levels. Users can log glucose data manually, but reminders and symptom tracking will be removed.

The latest update for Rust, titled "Upgrade Hard, Raid Harder," introduces mortars to combat rooftop camping and features nine rare workbench upgrades that enhance gameplay. Players can apply these upgrades from the workbench inventory, and they are not mutually exclusive. Mortars function similarly to cannons and require players to gauge distance and angle without a visual guide, with two types of shells available. Tin can alarms have been improved to accommodate various warning signals, and the vending machine interface has been redesigned for easier use. Loot distribution in the Deep Sea area has been adjusted, and drag has increased for boats with flat bows. Third-person grenade-throwing animations have been refined, and the computer station now requires power. New achievements related to the Naval update and Deep Sea zone have been added, and a Discord shop has been launched, offering a 20% discount on DLC. Facepunch is upgrading to Unity 6, which will discontinue support for Windows 8 and require server hosts to upgrade to Windows Server 2019.
