Windows retains thumbnails in a cache file named thumbcache_256.db, but it does not save a thumbnail of every deleted photo. Other operating systems, including macOS and Linux, also use thumbnail caching. Users can access their thumbnail cache by navigating to %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsExplorer, but this will not show deleted images. Thumbnails are created only when images are displayed in Explorer’s thumbnail view. Windows allows users to clear the thumbnail cache using the Disk Cleanup tool, and there is an option to disable thumbnail caching in Windows 11 Pro and higher. The cached thumbnails do not guarantee persistence and do not represent original files. Windows also keeps records of application launches in Prefetch, maintains entries for USB devices in the USBSTOR registry key, saves Wi-Fi networks and passwords, and can keep clipboard history and recent file shortcuts.

A recent post on X claims that Windows retains a thumbnail of every deleted photo in a file named thumbcache_256.db, which has raised privacy concerns among users. While Windows does maintain a thumbnail cache for efficiency, this practice is not unique to Windows, as other operating systems like macOS, Linux, and Android also use similar systems. Users can inspect or clear their thumbnail cache by accessing specific database files in the Windows Explorer directory. The claim that Windows retains "every photo you’ve ever deleted" is misleading, as thumbnails are only created when images are viewed in thumbnail mode. Windows does not cache every file, and thumbnails must exist before they can be cached. Additionally, Windows keeps app launch records in Prefetch files for performance optimization, maintains entries for USB devices in the USBSTOR registry key, retains records of Wi-Fi networks and passwords (which are encrypted), and can keep clipboard history and recent file shortcuts. Caching previews is common across various operating systems, and Microsoft is focused on user consent and privacy as it enhances Windows 11 with AI functionalities.

Microsoft PowerToys originated during the development of Windows 95 as small programs created by engineers to test concepts and ease workloads. The first collection of PowerToys included tools like FindX, Send To X, and Tweak UI. System Configuration (MSConfig) helps isolate configuration and startup issues by allowing selective loading of services and startup components, remaining useful despite modern management shifting to Task Manager. Disk Cleanup was launched with Windows 98 to help users reclaim disk space, featuring commands that allow saving cleanup profiles, a functionality that persists in Windows 11. Task Scheduler, introduced in 1995 as System Agent in the Microsoft Plus! pack for Windows 95, automates tasks based on specific triggers. System File Checker (SFC), dating back to Windows 98, scans and repairs protected Windows resources, evolving from a graphical utility to a command-line tool. Device Manager provides an expandable tree of hardware components and reflects advancements in Microsoft's Plug and Play system from Windows 95, continuing to assist users in hardware inspection and troubleshooting. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) was created for gamers in the late '90s to examine hardware and software configurations related to DirectX and remains available in Windows 11.

Apple provides built-in security features for macOS, including XProtect, Gatekeeper, and automatic malware removal, which contribute to the safety of Macs. However, these protections do not effectively address threats like infostealers, phishing, and adware. For enhanced security, third-party antivirus solutions are recommended. Bitdefender is noted for its strong detection rates and minimal system impact, making it suitable for most users. Intego specializes in Mac-specific threats and is ideal for users focused solely on Apple products. ESET and Trend Micro are recommended for businesses needing centralized management. F-Secure is recognized for its privacy-focused approach, while Norton offers a comprehensive suite of security features. AVG provides free real-time protection suitable for low-risk personal use, but may not be adequate for business needs. CleanMyMac is a maintenance tool rather than a traditional antivirus, focusing on system cleanup and optimization. Users should avoid running multiple real-time scanners simultaneously and ensure they purchase appropriate licenses for business use. It's important to evaluate the necessity of additional features and consider long-term pricing when selecting antivirus software.

An ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 owner reported that after using Eco Mode for several weeks, Windows 11 removed the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti GPU driver when switching back to performance mode. This behavior is expected due to Windows 11's automatic driver removal for inactive GPUs, managed by a maintenance task called pnpclean.dll, which cleans up drivers for devices not connected for 15 to 30 days. After the driver was deleted, the GPU was recognized as a generic display adapter, requiring reinstallation of the driver. The user found a workaround by disabling the Disk Cleanup handler in PowerShell to prevent automatic deletion, but this increased storage usage as Windows would no longer purge old driver packages.

The user experienced a slow computer with prolonged startup times and storage shortages despite manual cleanup efforts, including emptying the Recycle Bin and using Windows Disk Cleanup. A deeper system scan revealed hidden junk files such as temporary files, browser cache, and outdated logs. The user then utilized Advanced SystemCare 19 Free, which effectively identified and removed 3GB of junk files, resulting in improved startup speed, program launch times, and overall performance. Advanced SystemCare also includes features like a registry cleaner, large file finder, disk cleaner, and app/extension cleaner, and it serves as a comprehensive system optimization suite with tools for enhancing boot time and protecting privacy. The software does not delete files automatically and should be used alongside antivirus software for complete protection.

Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting Windows 11 users on versions 24H2 and 25H2, where a bug can consume up to 500GB of storage, leading to critical space shortages and potential system failure. This bug has been reported since May 2025, with a solution disclosed on June 29, but it will not be automatically rolled out until July 14. Users can check if they are affected by navigating to Settings > System > Storage and examining the “System files” category; if it exceeds 100GB, they are likely impacted. The issue is linked to a hidden file named CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal in the “%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsCapabilityAccessManager” directory. Microsoft has released an optional update (KB5095093) to address the bug, which also includes feature previews that may affect performance. Users are advised against deleting the problematic file to avoid disrupting WiFi connectivity and screen capture functionalities. An automatic fix will be deployed during the July 14 update.
