Android 15 releases to AOSP | App Developer Magazine

Android 15 is supposed to force apps to go edge-to-edge, but Google quietly added a way to opt out

Android 15 will enforce edge-to-edge display by default for applications targeting the new operating system, making status and navigation bars transparent to allow full-screen utilization. An opt-out API, windowOptOutEdgeToEdgeEnforcement, enables developers to bypass this enforcement by setting an attribute to true in their theme files, though this attribute is set to false by default.
