Google is preparing to roll out enhancements for Gboard, including a feature called "SmartEdit" that uses generative AI for voice-driven editing, allowing users to add, remove, or replace words with their voice. Another rumored feature, "Magic Cue," may integrate with Gboard's clipboard to recognize relevant information in apps like Gmail for easier data sharing. Magic Cue has previously been known as "Pixel Sense" and "Pixie" and aims to provide time-saving actions. Additionally, a "favorites" list for Emoji Kitchen will allow users to save their favorite emoji combinations. These features are still in development.

Microsoft is removing obsolete drivers from Windows Update, starting with those that have modern replacements. Older drivers will be allowed to expire, and partners can republish them only with justification. After a six-month grace period for feedback, outdated drivers will be permanently removed if no issues are raised. This cleanup is part of a recurring process to enhance security and streamline drivers for users. In Microsoft 365, outdated authentication protocols will be blocked by default starting in July 2025, requiring administrator approval for third-party app access. The first protocols to be discontinued include outdated browser authentication methods for SharePoint and OneDrive accessed via Remote PowerShell, as well as the FrontPage Remote Procedure Call protocol. Third-party applications will need explicit administrator permission to access files and sites, which may disrupt existing workflows.

Upon upgrading to Windows 11, users can hide the taskbar to optimize screen space on compact laptop screens. To do this, right-click the Start button, select "Settings," then "Personalization," scroll to "Taskbar," choose "Taskbar behaviors," and check the box for “Automatically hide the taskbar.” This setting allows the taskbar to disappear when not in use and reappear when the cursor is moved to the bottom of the screen.

The end of support for Windows 10 is set for October 14, 2025, after which users will not receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support, exposing them to cyber threats. Many legacy PCs do not meet the system requirements for Windows 11, leading to potential compatibility issues and performance problems if upgraded. Investing in a new Windows 11-compatible PC ensures better performance, energy efficiency, and long-term support, with built-in security features like TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Transitioning to Windows 11 offers advantages such as an improved user interface, integrated AI tools, enhanced default apps, personalizable workspaces, and better visuals. Continuing to use an unsupported Windows platform after 2025 can result in compliance issues, data loss, and increased maintenance costs. Replacing hardware rather than upgrading can mitigate these risks and ensure access to ongoing security features.

Megan Ellis explored Canva's new photo editing tool, comparing it to her preferred app, Snapseed. In a poll, 60% of users favored generative AI tools in photo editors, while 20% valued desktop and mobile availability and sliders for adjusting contrast and saturation. Ellis highlighted Canva's automatic background selection and removal feature, which Snapseed lacks, as a significant advantage. She noted that while Canva offers various image adjustments, it does not have advanced features like color curve adjustments but includes a brush editor for selective fine-tuning. However, she identified usability issues with the mobile app, including bugs and unnecessary steps in the editing process. Ultimately, she plans to use Canva for PC editing while continuing to rely on Snapseed for mobile photo editing.
