After Microsoft threatened legal action, a security researcher publishes a new Windows zero-day bug

A security researcher named Nightmare Eclipse has discovered a vulnerability in Windows, called ShieldBreak, which allows hackers to gain system-wide access to users' devices and sensitive data by exploiting a flaw in Windows Defender. The vulnerability affects Windows 10, Windows 11 (including version 25H2), and Windows Server 2025. A proof-of-concept exploit has been provided, requiring users to run a Windows application to trigger the vulnerability. Security researcher Will Dormann confirmed that Windows Defender must be enabled for the exploit to work. Microsoft has not yet released a patch for ShieldBreak, which is classified as a zero-day vulnerability. This discovery follows previous vulnerabilities disclosed by Nightmare Eclipse, including RoguePlanet, for which Microsoft issued an inadequate patch. The situation has heightened tensions between the researcher and Microsoft regarding the handling of bug reports, especially after Microsoft threatened legal action against researchers disclosing zero-days outside established protocols. The disclosure of ShieldBreak occurred shortly after Microsoft's monthly security patch releases, which have been increasing in number.

Even the AI assistant inside Russia’s state-backed Max messenger tells users not to trust the app

Alisa, the AI assistant in the Max messenger, has recommended users consider alternative messaging platforms such as Telegram, Signal, or WhatsApp. She highlighted several security vulnerabilities in Max, including the absence of end-to-end encryption and the direction of user data to VK-owned servers. The data collected by Max includes IP addresses, activity timestamps, contact lists, device and browser types, internet service provider information, and various metadata. Alisa suggests that users keep Max on a separate device, referred to as a “maxphone,” to protect sensitive information. If used on personal devices, she recommends using the browser version and restricting the app's access to location services, contacts, microphone, and camera to enhance privacy and security.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is free to claim on PC for the next week

Ubisoft is offering the PC version of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier for free through the Ubisoft Connect store until August 13, as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the Ghost Recon series. Android app developers may be unwittingly sharing their users’ location data with advertisers

Mobile apps often require precise location data for functionality, but there are concerns about the unintentional sharing of this sensitive information with third parties, such as advertisers and data brokers. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) found that third-party code in apps may collect location data without users' explicit consent due to default settings in software development kits (SDKs). Unless developers disable this feature, SDKs inherit app permissions, leading to the collection of users' location data. This raises privacy issues, as users' location histories can be sold to data brokers and potentially accessed by military and intelligence agencies. The EFF identified that certain Android apps, downloaded over 60 million times, were sharing location data without user awareness. Currently, there are no SDK-specific location permissions, meaning that consent to share location data with an app also extends to advertisers. The EFF calls for a change in industry standards to prevent default data sharing by advertising SDKs.

Google brings its age-assurance technology to Android developers worldwide

Google Play removes Max, Russia’s Kremlin-backed messenger, and VKontakte, VK’s flagship social network — three days after the EU sanctioned VK, their parent company

VK announced on July 16 that its Max messenger and VKontakte applications have been removed from the Google Play app store, along with the Odnoklassniki app. Users can still access these apps through alternative platforms like RuStore, Huawei AppGallery, Samsung Galaxy Store, and Xiaomi GetApps, and functionality will remain uninterrupted for those who have already installed them. VKontakte users are receiving notifications about a transition from the .com domain to .ru, assuring them of the platform's reliability. This change follows sanctions imposed by the European Union on July 13 against VK and its subsidiary, Kommunikatsionnaya Platforma. In late June, the Max messenger and VK social network app, along with Mail.ru’s email applications, were also removed from the App Store, with Odnoklassniki becoming unavailable at that time.
