Researchers at Aqua Nautilus have identified a malware strain named “PG_MEM” that targets PostgreSQL servers to deploy cryptocurrency miners. This malware uses brute force techniques to access databases with weak passwords, establishes a superuser role for administrative control, and executes shell commands to download additional malicious payloads, including the XMRIG mining tool for Monero. PG_MEM also removes existing cron jobs and creates new ones to ensure continuous mining operations while deleting files and logs to maintain stealth. The researchers noted that over 800,000 PostgreSQL servers may be vulnerable to this threat, which is part of a broader trend of cryptojacking campaigns targeting PostgreSQL databases. Previous similar campaigns were identified in 2020 and 2018 involving the PgMiner and StickyDB botnets, respectively.
