Windows 10 just got a big security update. Here’s who gets it

Microsoft released update KB5099539 for Windows 10, enhancing security and addressing vulnerabilities. This update is part of a broader initiative for Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021. It will be automatically installed on eligible systems, resulting in build number 19045.7548. The update resolves issues in File Explorer related to OneDrive shortcuts and erroneous error messages during file deletions, as well as fixes for keyboard shortcut malfunctions. Windows 10 PCs will receive updated Secure Boot certificates, which are essential for system integrity, with Microsoft actively rolling these out. Secure Boot certificates for most Windows devices are set to expire starting in June 2026. Users must be enrolled in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to benefit from the KB5099539 update, which provides continued support until October 12, 2027.

Windows Netlogon Flaw CVE-2026-41089: CVSS 9.8 [2026]

Microsoft makes Windows SSO prompts easier to manage

The change aims to provide users, particularly in the European Economic Area (EEA), with more control over their account usage across Microsoft applications. Deployment options for IT administrators include Group Policy, Microsoft Intune, other mobile device management solutions, Microsoft Configuration Manager, and any management tool that supports registry policy deployment. Administrators are advised to validate SSO behavior after deployment.

Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of support in 90 days

Microsoft announced that Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 and Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions will stop receiving updates on October 13, 2026. The Enterprise and Education editions will continue to receive mainstream support until October 12, 2027. Users are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11 25H2, which became available in September 2024. For unmanaged Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro users, the transition to 25H2 will occur automatically, although they can postpone the update. Microsoft has also extended the free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates program for consumers until October 12, 2027.

Microsoft is ending support for some versions of Windows 10 and 11 soon

Microsoft has extended support for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) until October 2027. Windows 11 version 24H2 will reach end of support on October 13, 2026, along with Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016. Windows 11 versions typically offer 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions, while Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 had five years of mainstream support followed by five years of extended support. Windows 11 version 23H2 is also expected to sunset around the same time. Users on Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro are recommended to upgrade to version 25H2, with version 26H2 anticipated soon. Windows 11 Enterprise and Education SKUs of version 24H2 have an extra year of support until October 12, 2027. Organizations using Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 should consider transitioning to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2024 or purchasing ESUs separately.

Currently, it can only be initiated from the Windows Recovery Environment or an elevated Command Prompt, with remote deployment not yet supported. The feature aims to simplify recovery processes and reduce reliance on USB drives, although it is not intended to replace existing recovery tools.

Microsoft Confirms Windows GDID Device Identifier That Cannot Be Disabled, Documented in FBI Case Filing

Microsoft has confirmed the existence of the Global Device Identifier (GDID), a unique identifier assigned to Windows installations, in a federal complaint against an alleged member of the Scattered Spider hacking group. The GDID is generated when a Windows system is set up with a Microsoft Account and remains active through various Windows updates. Disabling the GDID could disrupt Windows activation and access to Microsoft Store applications. The GDID is described as "a persistent, device-level identifier designed to uniquely identify an installation of a Windows operating system on a device." It is created during the provisioning of Windows with a Microsoft Account and is stored in the Windows registry under HKCUSOFTWAREMicrosoftIdentityCRLExtendedProperties. The GDID remains persistent through Windows updates but is not retained after a clean reinstall. A single user can possess multiple GDIDs linked through their account, OneDrive, and activation history. The FBI used the GDID to track Peter Stokes, an alleged member of the Scattered Spider group, across various VPN connections and proxy servers. The GDID was recorded visiting specific websites and was linked to Stokes's accounts on platforms like Snapchat and Facebook. Concerns have been raised regarding user privacy, as the GDID is assigned without user consent and cannot be disabled without compromising essential Windows features. Microsoft has not committed to providing user-facing controls or comprehensive documentation for everyday users regarding the GDID. Legal requests can compel Microsoft to disclose GDID activity data to law enforcement. The GDID is linked to the Microsoft Account rather than the device itself, meaning reinstalling the operating system does not sever this connection.
