Microsoft has rolled out a fix for the Extended Security Updates (ESU) wizard for Windows 10 Insiders, addressing a glitch that caused the enrollment process to crash. The update is available in the Release Preview Channel and resolves an issue where the ESU enrollment wizard would close when users clicked "Enroll now." This tool is essential for maintaining security updates for Windows 10 after official support ends in October 2025. The Release Preview Channel for Windows 11 24H2 introduces a change, replacing the Blue Screen of Death with the Black Screen of Unexpected Restart as part of the Windows Resiliency Initiative. Corporate usage of Windows 11 has surpassed 50.6 percent, a 16.8 percent increase since early 2025, driven by upgrade campaigns and new hardware rollouts. Windows 10 will reach its end-of-life on October 14, 2025, and nearly half of all business devices are still running it. Kieren Jessop from Canalys noted that the surge in Windows 11 adoption is primarily driven by the U.S., and the transition to Windows 11 is expected to be lengthy, similar to the persistence of Windows 7 after its end in January 2020. He mentioned that the slow transition could help demand in the PC market, as older devices are replaced over time.

The CachyOS installer offers an aesthetically pleasing yet somewhat confusing installation experience, particularly regarding the Bootloader selection, where the default is Systemd-boot instead of the more familiar Grub. Additionally, the additional package installer lacks sufficient context, which may confuse users. The installation process has become more streamlined compared to the past, where users had to deal with multiple ISO images and CDs. Now, one can easily create a Live USB using software like Rufus, Raspberry Pi Imager, or Balena Etcher. A Live USB allows users to test the operating system before installation and serves various purposes such as troubleshooting and data recovery. The author is installing CachyOS on a Lenovo X390 laptop with 8GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5-8265U.

A flaw in Windows 11 related to update KB5063060 is causing installation failures for many users, particularly in the gaming community, with error codes such as 0x800f0922, 0x80070002, 0x80070306, and 0x800f0991. Microsoft has announced an additional upgrade option for at least 240 million users still on Windows 10, as support will be withdrawn in just over 100 days. A new PC-to-PC migration experience is being rolled out to help users transfer files and settings during setup, and a Windows Migration feature integrated within the Windows Backup tool is being tested to assist those unable to upgrade due to hardware limitations. This feature is currently hidden in the latest release preview build but can be activated with a specific feature ID.

The end of support for Windows 10 is set for October 14, 2025, after which users will not receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support, exposing them to cyber threats. Many legacy PCs do not meet the system requirements for Windows 11, leading to potential compatibility issues and performance problems if upgraded. Investing in a new Windows 11-compatible PC ensures better performance, energy efficiency, and long-term support, with built-in security features like TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Transitioning to Windows 11 offers advantages such as an improved user interface, integrated AI tools, enhanced default apps, personalizable workspaces, and better visuals. Continuing to use an unsupported Windows platform after 2025 can result in compliance issues, data loss, and increased maintenance costs. Replacing hardware rather than upgrading can mitigate these risks and ensure access to ongoing security features.

Windows 11 was released in October 2021 and initially received a score of 6.5/10 due to its focus on aesthetics over functionality. The author currently uses both Windows 10 and Windows 11, with Windows 10 on their personal laptop and Windows 11 on their work laptop. They have been using Windows 11 for six months but still prefer Windows 10 for its familiarity. While Windows 11 has introduced features like enhanced virtual desktops, improved Microsoft Teams integration, a refined taskbar, and new widgets, these changes do not significantly impact the author's daily tasks. The author would consider switching to Windows 11 if it offered enhancements that directly improve their workflow, particularly with meaningful integration of Teams or AI-driven productivity features. The end of life for Windows 10 is approaching, prompting users to decide whether to upgrade to Windows 11 or explore alternatives. Microsoft is trying to encourage upgrades, but many users remain on Windows 10, which is still the most widely used operating system.

Organizations are increasingly concerned about the impending End of Life (EoL) deadlines for Microsoft applications and systems, with many large enterprises seeking advice on upgrading Microsoft Teams and legacy technologies. Key products like Windows 10, Office 2019, and Exchange Server 2019 will reach end-of-support by October 2025, prompting urgent decisions to mitigate operational, security, and compliance risks. Statistics show that as of January 2025, Windows 10 and Windows 11 each hold a 49.4% market share in the UK, indicating that half of all desktops are nearing their EoL. Dedicated EoL hotlines have been established to assist companies with migration strategies for applications approaching EoL, emphasizing the need for internal resources and expertise to manage transitions effectively. The industry-standard ‘R approach’ includes methods like rehosting and retiring applications to facilitate migrations. Organizations are encouraged to migrate out-of-support applications into secure environments rather than directly altering them, while remaining vigilant about EoL deadlines and the complexities of legacy systems.
