David R.B. created the YouTube channel Squared Media over a decade ago, focusing on Minecraft animations that have evolved from episodic content to grand cinematic experiences. The channel's standout video, “Animation Life,” has 250 million views, while other notable videos include “Song of War” with 64 million views and “Worlds Apart” with 41 million views. The animations feature unique storylines, improved quality, and themes of sacrifice and battling evil, with five tutorials available for aspiring animators using Blender. The content includes frequent violence, minimal blood, and darker themes typical of the Minecraft universe, such as potion-drinking and battles against necromancers. The oldest series, a Halo animation, contains some mild language, while the Minecraft content is generally suitable for a younger audience despite its violent elements.

Half-Life 2 was released on November 16, 2004, as a sequel to the original Half-Life from 1998, developed by Valve using the Source engine. The game introduced a broader narrative and memorable characters, including Gordon Freeman, Alyx Vance, and Father Grigori, while featuring a sophisticated physics engine and the Gravity Gun. It received widespread acclaim, achieving a perfect score from Edge magazine and selling over 12 million copies within seven years across multiple platforms. Half-Life 2 was instrumental in establishing Steam as a dominant digital distribution platform and set new standards for storytelling in action games. Despite its success, there has been no formal sequel, although episodic content and a prequel, Half-Life: Alyx, have been released.

SiN Episodes: Emergence was released in 2006 as the first of a planned series of nine episodes by Ritual Entertainment, building on the 1998 FPS SiN. Only one episode was released due to disappointing sales figures, leading Activision to cancel further development. Michael Russell, a former QA manager at Ritual, revealed that the expansion pack was nearly complete at 95% when it was halted. The cancellation was influenced by the marketing strategy for Quake 4, which revealed key plot points prematurely. Additionally, a movie tie-in project was also canceled after the production company demanded a larger cut just before the final contract was signed. These financial setbacks hindered Ritual's ability to continue the SiN Episodes series.
