Microsoft launched Windows 8 on June 1st, 2011, which faced backlash for its touch-centric design. The initial working title was "modern," leading to confusion with new components labeled "Mo." In response to criticism, Microsoft released Windows 8.1 a year later, reintroducing the classic desktop environment while retaining some contentious design choices. Windows 8 was officially discontinued in January 2016, but it continues to be used in various sectors, including hospitals, supermarket checkouts, gas stations, industry machinery, and government agencies. Some private users still prefer Windows 8 or 8.1, despite initial dissatisfaction. Government agencies often use proprietary firewalls to mitigate security risks associated with outdated software, and users are advised not to connect Windows 8 systems to the internet.

NVIDIA has introduced the RTX Spark, an Arm-based processor codenamed N1X, designed to run all Windows applications seamlessly in collaboration with Microsoft. The processor features up to 128GB of unified memory, native support for AI agents, and is integrated with NVIDIA’s graphics stack. The Surface Laptop Ultra is among the first devices to utilize this processor. Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's CEO, claims the RTX Spark can run 100% of NVIDIA’s software stack and has been meticulously optimized for compatibility with Windows applications. While many popular applications and games now run natively on Windows on Arm, NVIDIA has not yet released performance benchmarks for the RTX Spark. The "Prism" emulator allows Windows apps designed for x86 processors to run on Arm hardware through real-time translation, enhancing performance. Recent updates to Windows 11 have improved support for various x86 extensions, increasing compatibility for applications.

Android smartphones can replace several traditional office gadgets, including: - Scanner: A smartphone camera can digitize documents using free document scanner apps, eliminating the need for a physical scanner. QR scanner apps can also read QR codes and barcodes. - IR Remote: Some smartphones have built-in IR blasters, while others can use a small adapter and an app to function as universal remotes. - Computer Microphone: Smartphones can be used as microphones for computers through apps like Micstream or AudioRelay, enabling communication on platforms like Discord or Zoom. - Computer: Android phones can mimic desktop PCs using applications like Samsung DeX or Remote Desktop functionality. Virtual machines can emulate different operating systems, but may struggle with demanding applications. Installing Windows directly onto a phone is possible but risky.

Many individuals are experiencing AI fatigue, with concerns about uninspired content, job displacement, and environmental issues related to data centers. The term ‘AI slop’ reflects growing skepticism towards AI-generated media. However, the author had a positive experience with AI-generated podcasts using NotebookLM, particularly during a visit to South Korea. The podcast 'Understanding Korea, One Story at a Time' by Jiwon Yoon featured AI-generated voices, which initially caused conflict for the author but ultimately impressed them due to the accuracy derived from Jiwon’s expert notes. While the author prefers human hosts, they acknowledge that NotebookLM can outperform subpar traditional podcasts and help academics share their insights in accessible formats. NotebookLM allows for quick conversion of academic essays into podcasts, facilitating the dissemination of knowledge that might otherwise remain obscure.

Windows 11 has introduced a feature allowing multiple applications to access the camera simultaneously, which will be available to all users with the June 2026 Patch Tuesday. Previously, only one application could use the camera at a time, causing issues for users wanting to use multiple apps like Microsoft Teams and OBS. Users can enable this multi-camera mode by navigating to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and toggling the advanced settings. Microsoft is also working on improving the reliability of camera and audio connections and has introduced a "Basic Camera" feature to help diagnose camera problems related to driver issues. These enhancements are part of the Windows 11 KB5089573 (May 2026 optional update) and are being rolled out gradually.

Concerns about the Russian messaging application Max have grown due to vulnerabilities and surveillance features identified by IT specialists. An analysis revealed that Max can disable encryption on conversations with a single command and includes a forced-update feature that restricts user communication until the app is updated. Max collects extensive user data, including a list of installed applications and checks for VPNs, and has the ability to disable TLS session validation. Additionally, a version of Max included a neural network for speech recognition, although these features were later removed. Despite these concerns, VK, the parent company of Max, reported rapid user growth, surpassing 120 million users as of early May, with a daily reach of 68 million users. Many users are switching from Telegram to Max due to accessibility issues with Telegram and pressure from authorities. Major mobile carriers in Russia have collaborated with VK to send authentication messages through Max, further embedding the app in users' daily lives. However, Max has faced challenges in becoming a primary source for news and entertainment, hosting around 300,000 public channels compared to Telegram's 1.6 million, which has hindered advertising growth and led to an increase in scams.
