Microsoft confirms Windows 11 dark mode upgrade, with plans for third-party apps and Registry Editor

Windows 11 has introduced a dark theme that has received positive feedback, but certain legacy pop-ups, like the Properties tab, still use a light background. Microsoft is working on a dark-themed Properties tab and aims to enhance the dark mode experience across the operating system, as confirmed by senior executive Marcus Ash. He mentioned that there are no specific timelines for updates to legacy tools like the Registry Editor, but improvements are being made for consistency in dark mode across system-level dialogs. Third-party applications that do not adopt dark mode will continue to display in light mode, as Microsoft cannot enforce changes on them. Users currently experience inconsistencies with dark mode, particularly with legacy features that still show a light background. In December 2025, Microsoft rolled out dark mode for most operational dialogs, including those for file deletion and error notifications. Dark mode is now visible in various pop-ups, such as notifications for insufficient disk space and Recycle Bin confirmations. Microsoft is also testing dark mode in Windows Run (legacy).

Windows patch causes multiple Message Queuing errors

Microsoft has acknowledged issues related to the December 2025 security updates affecting Message Queuing (MSMQ) functionality on Windows 10 22H2, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016 systems. The updates KB5071546, KB5071544, and KB5071543 have caused problems such as inactive MSMQ queues, IIS sites showing “insufficient resources” errors, and applications unable to write messages to queues. These issues stem from modifications in the MSMQ security model, which now requires users to have write access to the C:WindowsSystem32msmqstorage folder, a privilege typically reserved for administrators. Systems with full administrative rights do not experience these problems, but this workaround is impractical for many enterprises. Microsoft is investigating the situation without a specified timeline for a resolution. Administrators may consider rolling back the updates, which poses its own security risks. In April 2023, Microsoft had warned about a critical vulnerability in MSMQ (CVE-2023-21554) that risked remote code execution attacks.

These notifications indicate a 'Config Read Failed' warning but do not affect the normal operation of the Windows Firewall on Windows 11 24H2 systems. The company is aware of the issue, which is related to a new feature under development, and is working on a resolution. No action is required from users, and similar past issues have not impacted system functionality.
