Meta AI arrives in Europe (for real)

Meta AI, the generative AI digital assistant from Meta, has launched in Europe after a year and a half since its initial release. The rollout includes generative text capabilities across WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger in 41 European countries and 21 additional territories worldwide. European users will only interact with Meta AI as a text chatbot, lacking features for generating or editing images and the ability to interpret photographs, which are available in the U.S. Meta AI has not been trained with data from EU users. The launch followed nearly a year of collaboration with European regulators regarding security and privacy.

New Windows 11 preview build improves privacy for European users

Microsoft's latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build, 26120.3281 (KB5052086), introduces several privacy-focused changes. The Location History API has been removed, meaning Windows will no longer retain location data locally. Additionally, the update removes "account-based content" from File Explorer sections for users of Entra ID, aligning with GDPR regulations and affecting only customers in the European Union. Other features include improved OneDrive document resumption between devices and updates to the Recall feature, which will delete existing Recall snapshots.

Windows 11's Recall feature will not have an option for users to uninstall it, as clarified by Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc, who stated that the earlier indication of an uninstallable feature was due to a bug. Recall is an AI-driven search tool that captures screenshots of user activity to improve search capabilities and is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. Although Recall faced backlash leading to its initial retraction, it is set to return for testing in October. There is uncertainty regarding whether European users will have alternative options due to strict data and privacy regulations.

Android banking trojan evolves to evade detection and strike globally – CyberGuy

The Medusa Android trojan has made changes to evade detection, including requesting fewer permissions and adding new ones like Broadcasting SMS and Package Management. It is targeting people globally, with two different botnet groups operating in Turkey, Canada, the US, Italy, and France. The hackers are using new tactics, such as installing the malware through apps downloaded from untrusted sources.

Microsoft removes “Copilot provider” app mistakenly added to Windows 11 by Edge

Microsoft accidentally added a Copilot entry to all editions of Windows, including Windows Server and consumer clients, with the release of Microsoft Edge 123.0.2420.65. Microsoft acknowledged the mistake and removed the Copilot entry from Windows Server with Edge 124.0.2478.67 in April, and from all versions and editions of Windows with Edge 126.0.2592.56 in June. The Copilot entry did not run any code in the background and did not extract data from users' PCs.
