BigDiskBuster PoC Blocks Windows Defender Updates

A new tool named BigDiskBuster has been released on GitHub, which disrupts Microsoft Defender Antivirus by preventing it from installing updates. It does this by consuming available disk space during the update process, causing Defender to remain on its current version and unable to receive new platform or signature updates. BigDiskBuster operates as a local denial-of-service technique and requires prior access to the target machine to execute. The tool was created by researcher Abdelhamid Naceri, known as Nightmare Eclipse, who has previously worked on similar projects. As of now, there is no CVE identifier, patch, or advisory from Microsoft regarding this issue.

PAYLOAD ransomware hijacks Windows Group Policy in encryption-less attacks

A sophisticated PAYLOAD ransomware attack targeted an unnamed manufacturing organization in the Middle East, exploiting vulnerabilities in Microsoft Active Directory Group Policy. The attackers accessed the network through a compromised domain account via FortiGate SSL VPN on April 11, escalated privileges to domain administrator by April 13, and created a malicious Group Policy Object (GPO) named "PAYLOAD." This GPO was linked at the root of the domain, allowing it to affect nearly all domain-joined Windows workstations. The attackers distributed ransom notes, altered desktop images, displayed ransom messages at login, and disabled local administrator accounts. A second GPO, "win Firewall Off," was deployed to disable Windows Firewall across all profiles. The malicious policies activated on April 14 after systems were rebooted, causing widespread disruption. The attackers also exfiltrated data from file servers and published it on the dark web, while Kaspersky found no evidence of Windows file encryption or active malware processes. Recommendations for organizations include monitoring GPO creation, checking for unexpected changes, implementing multi-factor authentication for VPN access, and protecting privileged accounts.

Hackers Disguise CHOSEN BRICK Malware as AI Apps, Antivirus Software and MRI Results

Iranian state-affiliated cyber actors are targeting dissidents, activists, and journalists using fake AI applications, counterfeit antivirus tools, and fabricated MRI scan results, primarily through a spyware family known as CHOSEN BRICK, which is designed for Windows systems. This campaign has been active since at least 2025 and affects individuals globally, including in the UK, US, and Netherlands. The malware establishes persistence via the Windows Registry Run key and communicates through Telegram, utilizing unique Bot IDs for each victim. CHOSEN BRICK is capable of extensive data collection, including capturing screenshots, recording audio, and stealing email content. Personal information from victims has been found on pro-Iranian leak sites, increasing harassment risks. Security measures should include monitoring for suspicious Registry entries and unusual communications, while users are advised to avoid unsolicited software installations and keep their systems updated. The FBI refers to this malware family as HEAVYGRAM.

GAMES Nintendo Switch can now be statically recompiled for PC

Enthusiasts in the emulation community have acquired a toolkit for the static recompilation of Nintendo Switch games on PCs, following the final update of the suyu emulator, which introduced Recompiler mode. This tool pre-compiles static code from the ARM AArch64 architecture into instructions for modern 64-bit x86 chips, allowing game logic to operate natively and reducing CPU overhead. Four REVSTEALER-Linked Modules Disable Windows Update and Defender to Run a Crypto Miner

Elastic Security Labs has identified four previously undocumented programs associated with REVSTEALER, a Windows information stealer that persists on infected machines after self-deletion. The programs are ProManager, WinUpdate, SoftManager, and LockAppHost, each with distinct functionalities. ProManager steals wallet files and logs passwords, WinUpdate monitors the clipboard for cryptocurrency addresses, SoftManager acts as a reverse proxy, and LockAppHost executes a cryptocurrency miner after disabling Windows Update and Microsoft Defender. REVSTEALER has been marketed as a commercial infostealer since February 2026, exfiltrating sensitive data such as browser passwords, cookies, and cryptocurrency wallet information. It deletes itself after reporting its activities but leaves the four programs installed for persistence. These programs share build tradecraft with REVSTEALER, including the use of identical packers and runtime function resolutions. REVSTEALER primarily spreads through game-cheat lures and disguises itself as pirated software. It employs evasion techniques to resist analysis, including checking for sandbox environments and using indirect system calls. Users are advised to avoid unofficial software and to follow specific steps if infected, such as re-enabling Windows Update services and changing passwords. Indicators of compromise include SHA-256 hashes for REVSTEALER and its associated programs, as well as domains linked to their command and control servers.

Fake Microsoft Edge, Kaspersky and Razer Installers Used to Compromise Windows Systems

An ongoing malware campaign is targeting Windows devices through counterfeit download pages for well-known software brands like Microsoft Edge, Kaspersky, and Razer. The campaign affects various sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing, gaming, technology, logistics, government, and education. It utilizes high-fidelity fraudulent websites that closely mimic legitimate vendors, with observed lure domains such as app-microsoft-edge[.]com[.]cn and kaspersky-lab[.]hl[.]cn. Attackers employ evasion tactics like server-side payload regeneration and create multiple copies of the same archive in quick succession. Victims are lured into downloading ZIP files that contain a bundled wrapper installer, which activates a stage-one executable in randomized directories. The malware often masquerades as legitimate software, with some payloads impersonating known applications. Persistence is achieved through scheduled tasks with unusual names, and the malware employs various evasion techniques, including deleting shadow copies and altering file permissions. Microsoft Defender has identified activity across multiple stages of the attack, including delivery, execution, and command-and-control communications. To mitigate risks, organizations are advised to block downloads from unofficial sources, enforce Tamper Protection, and implement Attack Surface Reduction rules. Indicators of compromise (IOCs) include specific lure domains and URLs associated with the campaign.

Tested: Windows 11 has fully removed the legacy tool abused by cybercriminals for malware and ransomware, called WMIC

Windows 11 will remove the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) tool in the upcoming September 2026 Update, marking its complete elimination after being deprecated in earlier versions. Testing of early builds shows that WMIC is no longer accessible, with attempts to use it resulting in a "command not recognized" error. Previously, WMIC was available as an optional feature, but it will no longer be included or reactivatable in the new update. Microsoft stated that this removal aims to improve the security and reliability of Windows, as WMIC has been exploited by cybercriminals for attacks. The September 2026 Update will also introduce other enhancements, including the ability to disable Bing in Windows Search and improvements in app speed.

Xodus Cracks Xbox Authentication and Game Package Decryption to Bring PC Game Pass to Linux

Developers of the Heroic Games Launcher have announced Xodus, an open-source project aimed at enabling access to PC Game Pass on Linux and macOS. Launched on August 10, 2026, Xodus has successfully addressed Xbox identity authentication and the decryption of MSIXVC packages, allowing local play of Game Pass titles for Linux and macOS users. Currently, the only way to access Game Pass on non-Windows devices is through Xbox Cloud Gaming, which requires a Game Pass Ultimate subscription and introduces latency. Xodus employs a layered architecture, including an Xbox Authentication Library (xal-rs) for managing Microsoft account sign-ins and license verification, and a reimplementation of the xgameruntime.dll for license checks and Xbox service access. The project can retrieve MSIXVC game packages using a valid Game Pass subscription and decrypt executables for local storage. However, it does not yet support UWP-based titles and lacks a user-friendly interface for general users. The project is under pressure due to Microsoft's upcoming transition to the MSIXVC2 package format, which Xodus does not currently support. Xodus is in early development with only a command-line interface available, and the team is working on emulating the GDK Gaming Services layer necessary for game initialization. The project is legal as it reimplements Xbox runtime behavior without enabling piracy, but it faces risks if Microsoft alters its authentication infrastructure.
