Wine has been translating Windows games to Linux since 1993, but Proton is what made it effortless

Wine is a compatibility layer, not an emulator, that translates Windows API calls into POSIX equivalents, allowing Windows applications to run on Linux. Proton, developed by Valve, builds on Wine and includes additional components like DXVK and VKD3D-Proton to enhance performance for Windows games on Linux through Steam. For Steam users, Proton is recommended for a streamlined gaming experience, while Lutris is suggested for those outside the Steam ecosystem. Wine has been in development since 1993, focusing on recreating the Windows API, but faced challenges with gaming compatibility. Cedega was an early attempt to improve gaming support over Wine but ultimately declined. Valve's development of Proton was motivated by the need for better compatibility for Windows games on Linux, especially highlighted by the launch of the Steam Deck. Wine struggled with synchronization issues and handling direct kernel access by Windows applications, which Proton addressed with seccomp-bpf filters and syscall user dispatch. Both Wine and Proton are crucial to the current state of Linux gaming.

Windows 11 Task Manager is finally getting deeper insights into NPU usage in AI PCs — No more trying to guess which apps are using the specialized hardware

Windows 11's Task Manager is being updated to provide more detailed insights into Neural Processing Unit (NPU) performance. The latest Insider Preview Build 26300.8142 introduces optional columns for NPU Dedicated Memory and NPU Shared Memory in the Details tab, along with showcasing neural engines associated with the GPU in the Performance tab. The NPU was first introduced in mainstream devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips and Microsoft Copilot+ PCs in 2024. Many new laptops and desktops now come equipped with NPUs, compatible with Copilot+, regardless of whether they use Qualcomm, Intel, or AMD hardware.

The actual triggers for system failures often stem from changes made by IT departments prior to updates, such as new drivers or configuration modifications. These changes may not show immediate issues until a reboot occurs during Patch Tuesday, revealing existing instability. Best practices for IT admins include controlled change management, validating drivers and policies before deployment, using staged rollouts, rebooting after major changes, and maintaining logging and monitoring systems. Microsoft conducts extensive testing of updates to ensure system security and stability, and delaying updates can increase risks.

Instead of making a joke, Valve celebrates April Fool’s Day by rolling out a Steam storefront ‘refresh’ that makes it look much nicer

Valve is testing updates to the Steam store home page aimed at enhancing user experience. The redesign includes a more cohesive feel across the platform, with a "Featured and Recommended" section providing in-depth insights and user reviews. Hovering over a game's cover art triggers a micro-trailer, which can be disabled. The "Discounts and Events" section features larger artwork, and the Discovery Queue opens as a transparent overlay. New sections for wishlists and downloadable content (DLC) have been added, along with an infinite scroll feature. The storefront now showcases higher-resolution game art, improving the visual experience for users with high-resolution monitors. The updates result in a layout that utilizes screen space more effectively. Valve has not announced when these changes will be available to all users, as it depends on beta testing outcomes. Users can join the beta program through the Steam client settings.

Microsoft issues emergency update for Windows 11 — fixes broken March preview update rollout from last week

Microsoft released an optional non-security update for Windows 11, identified as KB5079391, which caused significant installation issues for users, marked by error code 0x80073712. In response, Microsoft issued an emergency update, KB5086672, to address these problems for affected Windows 11 systems, including versions 25H2 and 24H2. This new update supersedes previous updates and includes protections and improvements from the March 2026 Windows security and non-security preview updates, along with an installation fix. The update also offers enhancements such as refresh rates exceeding 1000 Hz, improved auto-rotation and HDR reliability, and enhanced power efficiency for USB 4-connected monitors during sleep. Earlier in the year, the January security update, KB5074109, caused issues for gamers with Nvidia GPUs, leading to frame rate drops and system instability, with some users experiencing boot failures and errors like “UNMOUNTABLEBOOTVOLUME.” Additionally, users reported problems with shutting down or hibernating their PCs and disruptions in cloud-based applications like Outlook, OneDrive, and Dropbox.

Microsoft teases Windows 11’s vertical taskbar — then deletes the video

Users will soon be able to reposition the taskbar along any edge of their screen in Windows 11, a feature similar to macOS.
