Law enforcement officials in New Jersey have filed a lawsuit against Discord, claiming the company misled parents about its safety controls and failed to protect children from sexual and violent content on its platform. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin stated that Discord has violated consumer protection laws, exposing children to risks from online predators. The lawsuit alleges that Discord's safety features were inadequate and that the app's claims of protecting young users were misleading. Specifically, it criticized the "Safe Direct Messaging" feature for failing to effectively detect or delete explicit content. The lawsuit seeks remedies including an injunction against further violations, civil penalties, and forfeiture of profits generated in New Jersey.

Google Messages is introducing smart alerts that automatically blur explicit images before they are viewed by the recipient. This feature is opt-in for adults, while it is enabled by default for teens. Users will receive warnings about potentially explicit images and can choose to view the image, block the sender, or check the reason for the flag. If users send a sensitive image, the app will prompt them with a caution. All processing occurs on the user's device to protect privacy, and the feature currently applies only to still images, not videos.

Stuart Noble, a 53-year-old resident of Dunfermline, admitted to sending explicit images and messages to a police decoy posing as a 12-year-old girl between March 7 and 18 of the previous year. He used Kik Messenger to communicate with the decoy, expressing a desire to be submissive and engage in sexual acts. Noble requested a photograph from the decoy and sent explicit content in response. He also mentioned plans to buy pink bikini bottoms and sent images of these items along with sex toys. Following an investigation, police searched his residence and found clothing matching those in the explicit images, as well as a large bag of women’s underwear and sex toys in his vehicle. Noble claimed he thought he was engaging in fantasy chats with adults. He has been placed on the sex offenders register, and sentencing is scheduled for April 8.
