Apple removes messaging app used by protesters to bypass internet restrictions in India

Apple removed the offline messaging application Bitchat from its India App Store following a request from the Ministry of Information Technology. This decision was influenced by reports that demonstrators at Jantar Mantar used Bitchat to communicate during protests against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations amid internet restrictions. Bitchat is an open-source, decentralized messaging app that allows communication without mobile data or Wi-Fi, using Bluetooth Low Energy technology and ensuring privacy through end-to-end encryption. The app's removal halts new downloads and security updates, although it remains accessible on existing devices. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology invoked Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, to facilitate the takedown, citing national security and public order. The Internet Freedom Foundation criticized the removal as unconstitutional, arguing it infringes on free speech rights and called for transparency regarding the blocking order and rationale behind the action.

These 3 popular Windows apps run faster as CLI tools: Here’s how to switch

Windows provides graphical tools for various tasks, but terminal commands can be more efficient. Three utilities that serve as alternatives to File Explorer, Task Manager, and Notepad are zoxide, btop, and bat, all of which can be installed using winget. zoxide is a directory jumper that simplifies navigation through folder structures by learning user habits. It can be installed with PLACEHOLDERf0ff8219c0950297 and requires a line added to the PowerShell profile for activation. Users can jump to directories by typing PLACEHOLDERb9546a80b5ad16aa followed by part of the folder name, and it adapts over time based on usage patterns. btop is a system monitor that displays processor, memory, disk, network, and process data on a single terminal screen. The Windows version, btop4win, can be installed with winget install aristocratos.btop4win. It features live graphs, allows navigation via keyboard and mouse, and provides real-time updates on resource consumption. Users can filter and sort processes and terminate them directly from the interface. bat is a command-line file viewer that shows file contents with syntax highlighting and line numbers, eliminating the need to open Notepad. It can be installed using winget install sharkdp.bat and allows users to view files directly in the terminal. It integrates with Git to highlight changes and manages longer files with a pager for easier scrolling. These tools enhance efficiency for common tasks in Windows by providing quick access and streamlined workflows through the terminal.

Challengers Approach: Third Party App Stores Arrive to Google Play

Google has begun allowing rival, third-party app stores to be included within the Google Play Store, providing developers with more options for billing and app distribution. This change follows a court order resulting from Epic Games' antitrust lawsuit against Google, which challenged the company's restrictions on alternative app stores and in-app payment rules. The inclusion of these third-party stores enhances competition within the Android ecosystem, reducing Google's dominance and empowering users and developers with more choices. Users can now opt for alternative app stores if they are dissatisfied with Google's services, improving opportunities for privacy and security.
