OneDrive for Mac will soon support syncing with removable external drives, following the previous support for non-removable drives. This feature is available to Insiders using build 25.097 or later on macOS 15.0 or later. The external drives must be formatted for APFS, protected by FileVault, and not be read-only, network drives, or marked as quarantined. Users cannot transfer external drives between Macs for migrating OneDrive files; they must reconfigure OneDrive on the new device. Microsoft is seeking user feedback on this feature but has not provided a timeline for wider availability.

Windows 11 was released in October 2021. A user upgraded from Windows 10 22H2 to Windows 11 24H2 on a six-year-old HP Omen using an in-place upgrade. They backed up important files using OneDrive, Proton Drive, and a 4 TB external drive. The hardware was checked for compatibility with Windows 11 using Microsoft’s support page and the PC Health Check app. The user decluttered the system using Disk Cleanup and Revo Uninstaller. A system restore point was created for safety before the upgrade. The upgrade was initiated through Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update or the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, and it proceeded smoothly, allowing the user to keep files and applications.

Microsoft will cease support for Windows 10 in October 2025, meaning new security vulnerabilities will not be patched, increasing exposure to threats. Cybercriminals are expected to target Windows 10, which still has over 60% market share, making it an attractive target. ESET estimates that around 32 million PCs in Germany are still using Windows 10. Users can opt for the Extended Security Updates program for an additional cost, extending updates until October 2026, or use 0Patch for updates until 2030. Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 will receive updates until 2032, but its use as an office PC is restricted. Users are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11 where hardware compatibility exists for ongoing security updates and new features.

Microsoft has recommended the use of "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)," a tool that has been around for over 15 years, despite officially discontinuing support for it with the release of Windows 10 version 1709. This recommendation highlights the persistence of legacy features in Windows, as the tool remains functional for restoring systems from older versions of Windows to newer ones. Modern backup options from Microsoft, such as System Restore, File History, and System Protection, have significant limitations, leading to fragmented solutions for users. The coexistence of outdated tools with newer interfaces creates inconsistencies and mixed messages from Microsoft regarding backup solutions. Users considering Backup and Restore (Windows 7) should be cautious, as it is no longer being developed and may not perform reliably on modern operating systems. Third-party backup tools are suggested as more dependable alternatives.

Macs are facing an increasing number of cybersecurity threats, with malware targeting macOS rising from eight families in 2021 to 21 in 2023. To protect against these threats, users are advised to implement antivirus software, maintain regular backups using tools like Apple's Time Machine and cloud services, enable the built-in firewall, use password managers for secure password storage, and utilize a VPN for secure internet connections, especially on public Wi-Fi.

The Windows 11 2024 Update, referred to as a significant overhaul by Microsoft, requires a more extensive installation process compared to previous updates. The installation of the Windows 11 24H2 update took at least one hour on four tested laptops, with the following times recorded: MSI Prestige 16 AI Evo B1MG took one hour and two minutes, Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 took one hour and 37 minutes, HP Victus took one hour and 27 minutes, and Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 took one hour and 45 minutes. The update is being rolled out in phases and can be accessed for free through various methods, including Windows Update settings or downloading directly from Microsoft. Users may encounter interruptions when downloading the ISO, and creating installation media is an alternative option. The installation process involves agreeing to a license agreement and may require additional updates before completion. It is recommended to back up personal files, although the installation will not erase them. Older devices may take longer for the upgrade, and users should allocate at least one to two hours for the process.
