Some Android Phones Can No Longer Access Google Play

Smartphone users are now keeping their devices for an average of two and a half years before upgrading, an increase from 22 months in 2016. Android manufacturers, including Google and Samsung, are now providing seven years of operating system and security updates for their flagship models. Google has restricted access to the Play Store for devices running Android 6 Marshmallow, raising the minimum supported version to Android 7 Nougat, marking the end of support for Marshmallow after nearly 11 years. By December 2025, devices running Android 6 or earlier will account for only 0.4% of the Android install base accessing Play Store services. App developers must adhere to Google's version targeting protocols, which may result in many apps not functioning on older versions like Marshmallow. Users can download apps from alternative sources but must be cautious about compatibility.

Big Changes Are Coming To Android’s Google Play Store This Month

In October 2024, a judge ordered Google to allow third-party app stores on the Android platform. Google has now decided to comply with this ruling, retracting its motion to amend the injunction. Changes are set to be implemented starting July 22, 2026, allowing third-party app stores to operate within the Play Store in the U.S. Developers' app listings will automatically be available to these stores unless they opt out. Third-party stores can offer apps from the Play Catalog if they pay an annual fee and meet certain criteria. However, questions remain regarding the integration of Play Protect security features and the assessment of third-party store security.

Survey says this is the best Play Store alternative, but Google might not agree

In a recent poll of nearly 3,000 participants, F-Droid was the most favored alternative to the Google Play Store, receiving 37.7% of the votes. Aurora Store followed with 17.4%, Samsung’s Galaxy Store garnered 16.3%, APKMirror received 13.7%, and Obtanium had 11.9%. F-Droid is an open-source app store that does not replace the Play Store, lacking popular apps like Spotify and Gmail but offering open-source alternatives. Aurora Store allows access to the Play Store's catalog without a Google account but does not support purchases made through the Play Store.

There’s one group of Android users Google’s new sideloading rules won’t affect

LineageOS will not be affected by Google's upcoming developer verification system, which applies only to certified Android devices that come with Google Mobile Services (GMS). LineageOS operates independently of GMS and does not go through Google's certification process, making it exempt from the new requirements. Starting September 30, 2026, Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand will require all apps to be registered to a verified developer, with a global rollout in 2027. LineageOS has stated that it does not include the verification feature in its ROM and is unaware of any GApps package that would enable it. The project may disable the verification feature if integrated into Play Services in the future. LineageOS acknowledges concerns from organizations like F-Droid and the EFF regarding the potential for increased control over app distribution by Google.
