The Fallout Classic Collection, which includes the original 1997 Fallout, its 1998 sequel Fallout 2, and the tactical spinoff Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, is available for free on the Epic Games Store until September 5, 2024. The original Fallout is set in a post-nuclear Southern California in 2161, where players, as a vault dweller from Vault 13, must find a water purification chip. Fallout 2 follows the Chosen One, a descendant of the first game's protagonist, who seeks a Garden of Eden Creation Kit (G.E.C.K.) to rejuvenate their village. Fallout Tactics focuses on squad-based tactical combat. The collection is also available on Steam, and subscribers to PC Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate can access all three games as part of their membership.

Fallout: New Vegas is regarded as a high point in the Fallout series, despite some fans feeling it is undervalued by Bethesda, which did not develop it. There is interest in a new Obsidian-developed Fallout game, with Josh Sawyer expressing willingness to lead such a project under certain conditions. Tim Cain, co-creator of the original Fallout, indicated he would consider returning if there were opportunities for new creative exploration. However, both Sawyer and Cain's return seems unlikely due to Bethesda's focus on iterative design rather than narrative depth, and the current industry trend towards risk-averse blockbuster titles.

Project Van Buren, also known as Fallout 3, was a game prototype developed by Black Isle Studios in the early 2000s. Despite efforts to salvage the project, it was ultimately cancelled due to financial constraints and unrealistic development expectations. This marked a turning point for Interplay, leading to the auctioning off of the Fallout IP to Bethesda in 2007.
