Samsung's Enhance-X app for photo and video editing recently received an update that includes a new interface, plugins, and expanded editing options. However, users in the United States, Korea, and Israel have reported issues such as installation failures and crashes after the update, with some experiencing an update loop that prevents access to new features. While not widespread, these issues suggest potential problems in Samsung's update process. Some users have successfully installed the update, and an alternative solution for those facing difficulties is to sideload the APK to bypass the Galaxy Store update issues.

A new variant of the NGate malware family has emerged, using a trojanized Android application to capture payment card data and personal identification numbers (PINs). This modified version of HandyPay, a legitimate NFC relay app, has been distributed since November 2025, primarily targeting users in Brazil. The malware intercepts NFC payment card data and allows fraudulent transactions. Two distinct malware samples have been observed, delivered through phishing infrastructure that impersonates a Brazilian lottery site and a Google Play listing for a card protection tool. The trojanized app captures NFC data, requests the victim's card PIN, and transmits this information to attacker-controlled infrastructure. It requires minimal permissions, leveraging its role as the default payment application to evade detection. Evidence suggests that generative AI tools may have been used in its development, indicated by emoji markers in debug logs. ESET has reported its findings to Google, and Google Play Protect can detect known versions of the malware. The developer of HandyPay is investigating the misuse of its application.

Microsoft states that the built-in security features of Windows 11 are adequate for most users, suggesting that third-party antivirus solutions may not be necessary. However, there are scenarios where third-party antivirus software can be beneficial, especially due to recent vulnerabilities in Defender. Independent testing organizations have rated Defender highly, with AV-Test placing it among the top antivirus solutions and AV-Comparatives awarding it the Advanced+ badge. Microsoft emphasizes that Defender runs continuously as part of Windows and receives updates through Windows Update, ensuring automatic protection. The company advises that additional security software may be useful for users managing multiple devices or seeking specific features like identity monitoring or parental controls. Safe computing habits are also recommended to enhance security.

Recent supply-chain attacks are increasingly targeting well-known software such as CCleaner, Steam games, and Notepad++, allowing hackers to distribute malware through legitimate updates. The introduction of artificial intelligence has accelerated the frequency and sophistication of these attacks, with hackers compromising developers or exploiting third-party tools to inject malicious code. Notepad++ was specifically affected by a supply-chain attack where a compromised third-party tool led to the distribution of tainted software. Attackers use various strategies, including hacking developers' credentials, purchasing access, or compromising tools relied upon by developers. Antivirus software is crucial for protecting users from malware, even from trusted sources, as modern solutions have minimal impact on system performance.

Microsoft asserts that Microsoft Defender is sufficient for most Windows 11 users, negating the need for additional antivirus software. Windows 11 is described as "the most secure Windows yet," with Defender providing adequate protection against everyday risks, provided users maintain default settings and keep their systems updated. However, power users, particularly those managing multiple devices or requiring advanced features, may benefit from third-party antivirus solutions. Installing additional antivirus software can lead to increased system resource usage and potential conflicts with Defender, so it is recommended to use only one real-time antivirus solution for optimal performance.

Many free antivirus services monetize user attention or data, and caution is advised when selecting these options. Recommended free antivirus tools should be free of ads or spyware. Trustworthy antivirus providers present clear privacy policies detailing data collection and sharing practices. Effective free antivirus tools offer real-time protection, on-demand malware scans, and user-friendly features. While free antivirus software is generally sufficient, paid options provide additional cybersecurity tools. The best free antivirus tools consume less than 5% of system resources, with active scans ideally not exceeding 40% CPU usage. Avast faced backlash for selling customer data to over 100 third parties and was fined million by the FTC in 2024. Kaspersky was banned in the U.S. in 2024 due to concerns about potential intelligence exploitation, and it cannot be recommended at this time.
