Microsoft has launched Windows Backup for Organizations, a tool designed to assist businesses in securely backing up and restoring Windows settings during the transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11. This tool is particularly useful for organizations upgrading multiple laptops, as it helps minimize manual adjustments. As of April 2025, 52.9% of Windows users are still on Windows 10, while Windows 11 has a market share of 43.7%. Users are encouraged to back up data before upgrading, and alternatives like Linux are suggested for those hesitant to switch to Windows 11, especially for older hardware.

Fedora Linux has officially joined the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), allowing users to run Fedora 42 within a Windows environment. Installation is straightforward with the command wsl --install FedoraLinux-42, and launching it requires wsl -d FedoraLinux-42, with no password needed by default. Users are automatically added to the wheel group for sudo access. Fedora 42 is streamlined, excluding unnecessary packages, and includes the DNF package manager, though Flatpak must be installed manually for graphical applications. The Fedora team is working on enhancing Flatpak support and introducing hardware-accelerated graphics for GUI applications in WSL. This inclusion of Fedora expands the options available to Windows users interested in the Linux ecosystem.

The official listing includes Arch Linux among other distributions, and it has a market share of 9.68% on Steam, with a combined share of 14.74% when considering its downstream distributions. Arch Linux is popular among users who prefer a customizable experience and has gained attention in the tech community, including endorsements from notable figures like PewDiePie.

Linux distributions have evolved to be more accessible for users transitioning from Windows and macOS, with Debian-based distributions being relatively easy to navigate. DietPi is an ultra-lightweight OS that requires manual configuration of essential packages, making it more suitable for experienced users. Tails prioritizes user privacy by using the Tor network and operates from a USB drive, but is not ideal for casual users. Qubes OS enhances security through virtualization but has a steep learning curve and challenges with GPU passthrough. Talos Linux is optimized for Kubernetes projects but may be difficult for newcomers due to its lack of SSH support and immutable design. Bazzite, a gaming-focused distribution based on Fedora, offers a user-friendly setup but may not support multiplayer games with kernel-level anti-cheat technology, making it less suitable for competitive gamers.

The Framework 13 laptop, equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor and Radeon 780M graphics, was tested for gaming performance on Windows 11 and Fedora 40. Both operating systems were set to "Performance" mode, and results were recorded from the second run of each benchmark to avoid thermal throttling. In the game "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," Fedora 40 achieved a 7% higher average framerate compared to Windows. For "Total War: Warhammer III," Windows had a slight performance lead, while in "Cyberpunk 2077," Fedora 40 outperformed Windows by 3% without FSR scaling and by 7% with FSR, also showing a 24% increase in minimum framerate when settings were adjusted from Low to Medium. In "Forza Horizon 5," Windows led by 7%, but the performance gap has narrowed significantly compared to previous years.
