Many Android devices, including those from Samsung and Google, often come with 128GB or less of internal storage, highlighting the need for effective storage management. The Clean tool in the Files by Google app helps users manage storage by identifying outdated files for deletion. Users can access the Clean tool by opening the app, selecting the Clean tab, and following prompts to delete unnecessary files. To permanently free up space, users must also delete files from the Trash tab. Pixel phone users can enable Smart Storage, which automatically deletes media backed up to Google Photos that is older than 60 days. Regular storage maintenance is important to prevent running out of space, and the Files by Google app provides tools for monitoring and managing storage effectively.

Google is discontinuing the Share apps feature on its Play Store, which allowed users to share applications with nearby individuals using Quick Share. Introduced in 2022, this feature had limitations, such as the inability to share paid applications, books, movies, age-restricted apps, or corporate applications. The retirement was confirmed in the December release notes for version 44.1 of the Play Store. Users can still share Android applications using the Files by Google app with Quick Share. The removal of the Play Store's app sharing option will be gradual.

The Files by Google app has introduced a new floating action button (FAB) labeled "Receive" in version 1.4955.677425801.0, located next to the "Scan" button. This button allows users to access Google's Quick Share feature, enabling file reception from nearby devices. The "Receive" button prompts users with "Receive from others nearby" and opens the Quick Share sheet within the app. The feature is expected to roll out soon for Pixel device owners, and it simplifies the file reception process compared to the previous method.

Google's Files by Google app has been redesigned to include a carousel feature for viewing recent files, similar to the "Memories" format in Google Photos. This update is available in the latest beta and some official versions of the app. The previous layout with "Recents" and "Categories" has been replaced by a visually engaging carousel that displays recent files on rectangular cards. Users can tap on a card for a full-screen view and access options to share, send to trash, or mark files as "Starred." The carousel can show up to ten cards, with a "see all" button for additional files organized by folder names. This update is part of version 1.4237.652465286.1-release and aligns with Google's design principles for a consistent user experience across its applications.

The Files by Google app has introduced a new carousel view in its "Recents" section in the latest beta version 1.4374.x, replacing the previous 2×2 grid format. This carousel displays rectangular cards with previews of individual files, including documents and images, allowing for quicker identification and selection without accessing multiple folders. Each card shows file names and extensions, and includes a three-dot menu for options like sharing, deleting, or starring files. Tapping a card opens the file in full-screen mode, and a "See all" option lets users view all folders at a glance. This feature is similar to the Memories page in Google Photos. Users can access the new interface by updating to the latest beta version.
