Google is fully embracing Fitbit following its acquisition, as demonstrated by the announcement of the Material 3 Expressive redesign for the Fitbit app. This update features a streamlined bottom navigation bar, a pull-down sync gesture, a distinctive loading indicator, and a linear progress bar for syncing. The redesign includes visual enhancements such as checkmarks for completed goals, unique sheet designs for Today, Fitness, and Sleep feeds, and detailed cards with color coding. The app does not currently support Dynamic Color, maintaining a default blue accent for certain UI elements. The navigation experience is described as seamless, with smooth loading charts and the introduction of an AI-powered Personal Health Coach. The Material 3 Expressive update is set to launch next year, with a current public preview limited to users in the United States.

Google is updating its Google Maps app for Android, which has 154 million daily active users. Users spend an average of 23 minutes daily on the app, which offers features like restaurant recommendations and historical insights. The latest changes focus on two buttons: the Floating Action Button (FAB) has been redesigned to be smaller, teal, and diamond-shaped, directing users to a journey planning screen where they can add stops and customize routes. The current location indicator has changed from a blue arrow to a squircle shape with a compass icon, turning into a blue dot when the user's position is not displayed. The layers button has also been updated to include a small dot, allowing users to choose map views and access transit details. These updates are rolling out for users with version 25.39 of Google Maps, with those on version 25.40 already experiencing the new design. The changes reflect careful consideration of user interactions, particularly in the design of the location button's blue dot icon.

Google Docs is set to receive enhancements that include three new document search filters: by type (spreadsheets, presentations, text documents), by people (files owned by specific individuals), and by modified date (last seven days or custom ranges). The platform will adopt the Material 3 Expressive design language, updating the floating action button to a bolder appearance with a pill-shaped container. Additionally, the formatting tool will be relocated from the top of the screen to the bottom toolbar, which will include a horizontal scroll function for easier access to formatting options, especially in portrait mode. These updates are based on findings from an APK teardown and may change before the public release.

Users of the Google Home app on Android 16 experienced a bug in the Routines creator and editor, which was resolved with the release of Google Home version 3.37. The update restored accessibility to buttons at the top and bottom of the Routines interface, allowing users to navigate to the Automations tab and access options for Household or Personal routines. The close ‘x’ and “Save” buttons are now available, improving user experience. The three-dot overflow menu, which includes actions like the Script editor and Help, has also returned. Previously, page titles were obscured by the front-facing camera, and users faced challenges with actions like “Remove action.” The issue originated from Android 16's restrictions on apps targeting the latest version. The resolution was implemented via a server-side rollout with no visible changes in the initial release of Google Home 3.37.

In a recent update to the Phone by Google app, the Favorites tab has been moved from the bottom of the screen to the top, with an arrow indicating its functionality. For beta users, tapping the down arrow reveals five favorite contacts and a button to add new favorites. This redesign improves user experience and layout, allowing more space for Recents, Contacts, and Voicemail tabs, and makes the Floating Action Button (FAB) for the dial pad more accessible. The update is available on devices like the Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 QPR1 Beta, version 182.0.779772896-publicbeta. Users not seeing the new feature may be awaiting a server-side rollout. Pixel users can check the app version by navigating to Settings > Apps > See all apps, locating the Phone app, and scrolling to the bottom of the App info page.

Google is redesigning the Phone by Google app under the Material 3 Expressive framework, phasing out the Favorites tab in favor of a "Favorites bar" at the top of the Recents feed, now rebranded as "Home." This new bar will feature a carousel of favorites with larger profile avatars and an "Add" shortcut. The app's navigation will be simplified into three main sections: Recents, Contacts, and Voicemail, along with a floating action button for quick access to the number pad. The latest beta version, 182, has been rolled out, but some users may not see the changes immediately due to server-side components. The redesign will also affect both Pixel and non-Google phones, with a streamlined bottom navigation bar consisting of Home, Keypad, and Voicemail.
