Googlebook Cross-Device Features Locked Behind Android 17

Google's new Googlebook cross-device features require a smartphone running Android 17 to access functionalities like phone app streaming, task continuity, and shared file access. Only recent Google Pixel models and Samsung foldable devices with One UI 9 come pre-installed with Android 17, leaving many users with older flagship and mid-range devices unable to utilize these features. New models, such as the POCO F9 series, also launch with Android 16, making them incompatible. Additionally, applications with DRM-protected content or sensitive information will not stream to the laptop, displaying a blank privacy screen instead. The features are included at no extra cost, but their availability depends on the smartphone's Android version.

The Pixel 11’s HiLight feature is too limited, but I fixed it with this free app

The Google Pixel 11 series introduces the HiLight feature, which consists of eight multicolor LEDs on the back of the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. HiLight currently has limited functionality, primarily illuminating one of five colors for designated favorite contacts and activating during the use of the Gemini voice assistant. Users can customize HiLight for only five contacts, which may lead to color confusion. A free open-source app called HiLight Studio, developed by Dhananjay Bhosale and available on GitHub and the Google Play Store, enhances user control over the LED lights. Setting up HiLight Studio is straightforward, requiring the Shizuku app and enabling developer options on the device. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold features IP68 durability and magnetic Qi2 support, allowing users to utilize HiLight through the HiLight Studio app.

Chrome for Android has windows, and they’re better than tab groups for multitasking

Chrome for Android supports the use of windows, allowing users to open multiple windows, each with its own tabs while sharing bookmarks and settings. Users can open an unlimited number of windows, which appear distinctly in Android's Recents screen. To open a new window on slab-style phones, users activate split-screen mode, tap the three-dot menu icon, and select "New window." For foldable phones, users can skip the split-screen step. Tabs can be moved between windows using the three-dot menu icon. All open windows can be managed through the Recents multitasking screen, where users can assign names or close them. This window functionality enhances multitasking and organization, making mobile browsing more akin to a desktop experience. Other browsers like Samsung Internet and Microsoft Edge have adopted similar features, while Firefox has not.

Android Auto bug is preventing calls from closed foldable phones

Motorola and Google are addressing an issue with Android Auto affecting users of clamshell foldable devices, specifically that outgoing calls cannot be made while the phones are closed. Incoming calls can be received without issues, but attempts to make outgoing calls result in no connection. This problem has been reported by owners of Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip devices and appears to have arisen after the transition from Google Assistant to the new Gemini system. Reports of this malfunction have been ongoing for several months, with some claims dating back to September. No definitive solution has been announced yet, and users may need to keep their devices open to make calls while driving.

Create My Widget: Google’s AI app for custom Android widgets is available on the Play Store

Google has launched a new application called "Create My Widget," available on the Play Store since September 24, 2026. This app allows users to create Android widgets using plain language instead of pre-defined templates. It is currently compatible with Pixel and recent Galaxy smartphones, with plans for broader compatibility in the future. The app uses Gemini technology to generate widgets based on user descriptions and aggregates information from various Google services. The widget creation process involves describing the desired widget, receiving suggestions from Gemini, and customizing the widget before placing it on the home screen. The app currently supports categories such as Combo, Weather Alerts, World Clock, Daily Overview, Important Appointments, and Markets, with future updates expected to include additional categories. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been reported as incompatible, and a version for Google's upcoming Chromebook successor, "Googlebooks," is anticipated to launch in early October 2026.

Foldable phone users spend way more on apps than the rest of us plebs

Google claims that foldable phone users spend 14 times more on in-app purchases compared to users of standard smartphones. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is priced at ,900, while the regular 11 Pro starts at ,100, indicating that consumers of foldable devices are likely to invest more in both hardware and software. Although specific dollar amounts and detailed breakdowns of these purchases are not provided, in-app purchases can include subscriptions and virtual currency for games. Despite foldable phones representing a smaller market segment, their users are inclined to spend significantly more on applications. The reasons for this elevated spending may relate to the demographic of foldable phone users, who may have more disposable income.
