SmartTube YouTube app for Android TV breached to push malicious update

An attacker gained access to the developer's signing keys for SmartTube, an open-source YouTube client for Android TV, leading to a malicious update being distributed. The developer, Yuriy Yuliskov, confirmed the compromise and plans to release a new version with a different app ID. Users reported that Play Protect flagged SmartTube as a potential threat. A reverse-engineered version, identified as 30.51, contained a hidden library named libalphasdk.so, which was not part of the public source code and collected device fingerprints without user knowledge. There is currently no evidence linking the malware to account theft or DDoS attacks, but concerns remain. Yuliskov has announced safe beta and stable test builds on Telegram, but they are not yet on GitHub. Users are advised to stay on older verified builds, avoid logging in with premium accounts, and disable auto-updates. Version 30.19 does not trigger Play Protect warnings, suggesting it may be safer.

TikTok malware scam tricks you with fake activation guides

Cybercriminals are exploiting TikTok to deceive users by presenting malicious downloads as free activation guides for popular software, including Windows and Microsoft 365. Security expert Xavier Mertens identified this campaign, which involves TikTok videos showcasing PowerShell commands that mislead users into executing them as administrators. These commands redirect users to a malicious website, downloading Aura Stealer malware that extracts saved passwords, cookies, and other sensitive information. This scam employs a ClickFix attack, making victims believe they are following legitimate instructions. The PowerShell command links to a remote domain, slmgr[.]win, which retrieves harmful executables hosted on Cloudflare, including updater.exe, a variant of Aura Stealer. Another file, source.exe, executes code in memory, complicating detection. To protect against these scams, users should avoid executing commands from TikTok, download software from trusted sources, keep security tools updated, use strong antivirus software, consider data removal services, reset credentials if compromised, use unique passwords, and enable multi-factor authentication.

The update primarily addresses a bug that incorrectly indicated Windows 10 LTSC devices had reached their end of support. It also includes security updates that fix 63 vulnerabilities, including one actively exploited elevation-of-privilege vulnerability, with no known issues reported.
