Google has introduced early-stage developer capabilities for Android aimed at connecting applications with intelligent agents and personalized assistants, specifically Google Gemini, while prioritizing privacy and security. A key feature of this initiative is AppFunctions, introduced with Android 16, which allows applications to expose specific capabilities for access by agent apps, enabling seamless task execution on devices. Developers can define app functionalities for AI assistants, facilitating various use cases such as task management, media creation, cross-app workflows, and calendar scheduling. A practical example includes the Samsung Gallery app, where users can request specific photos through Gemini, which triggers the appropriate function to retrieve them. Additionally, Google is advancing a UI automation framework for AI agents, allowing for the execution of generic tasks across applications with minimal coding. Future expansions of these capabilities are planned for Android 17, with ongoing collaboration with select app developers to enhance user experiences.

Samsung is introducing a built-in Private Album feature in the Gallery app as part of the One UI 8.5 update, aimed at enhancing privacy for sensitive photos. This feature simplifies the process of managing private images, allowing users to easily move photos to the Private Album without the need for the Secure Folder. Access to the Private Album is secured by fingerprint or screen lock, and screenshots are disabled within this section. Currently, the feature is in beta and has limited functionalities, such as sorting files only by date. The official rollout is pending for users to fully experience the feature.

The Samsung Internet Browser app can be installed from the Play Store and the Galaxy Store. An upcoming update with One UI 8.5 is expected to coincide with the Galaxy S26 series launch. The update will feature a new icon, a revamped welcome screen, and a floating address bar that disappears while scrolling. Users will be able to block fixed-position pop-ups, and the tab management layout will resemble the Gallery app's grid view. A compact floating bar will allow customization of button arrangements. Users will also be able to "like" videos directly from the browser, and the browser will check for APK availability in the Galaxy Store during downloads. Additionally, a pop-up will offer the option to close all open tabs when closing the browser, with the ability to disable this feature for future sessions.

The Microsoft Phone Link app will soon disable the ability to view photos directly from the phone’s gallery, consolidating photo access within File Explorer. Users will receive an alert when accessing the “Photos” section of the Phone Link app, indicating that photo viewing is transitioning to File Explorer, which offers enhanced photo management features such as multi-select, copy and paste, and drag-and-drop functionality. Unlike the Phone Link app, File Explorer allows access to the entire mobile storage, including videos. Users can enable mobile device visibility in File Explorer through the “Manage mobile devices” settings. Windows 11 integrates paired phones into File Explorer, allowing users to view all files on their mobile devices. The Phone Link app’s Photos section will redirect users to File Explorer, where the camera folder is displayed, but accessing other images requires navigating through directories. The transition may present a steeper learning curve for users accustomed to the Phone Link app’s streamlined photo access.

Samsung will discontinue support for Microsoft’s OneDrive within the Gallery app, transitioning to its own cloud solution for photo backups. A leaked version of One UI 8.5 indicates that phrases like “Sync with OneDrive ending soon” suggest this change is imminent. Users currently syncing their photos in the Samsung Gallery app will need to back up their content directly to Samsung Cloud, as OneDrive support will be phased out. The exact timeline for this transition is unclear, but users must adapt to the upcoming changes.

Samsung has introduced the Gallery Assistant beta app as part of its Good Lock ecosystem, currently available for testing in South Korea for users with One UI 8 devices, specifically the Galaxy S25 series, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Galaxy Z Flip 7/FE. Users can sign up for the beta through the Samsung Members app. The app includes features such as advanced cropping and rotation options, media compression capabilities, custom watermark functionality, image comparison tools, PDF conversion, and batch processing for extracting subjects from multiple images. It aims to provide a more streamlined editing experience compared to Samsung's built-in photo editor and complements the Camera Assistant app for enhanced photographic capabilities.
