I enabled Windows 11’s drive compression and got over 60GB back without slowing down my PC

Running out of space on a PC can be frustrating, especially with rising storage and RAM prices. Windows 11 offers a file compression feature that allows users to compress files on their drives, freeing up space without compromising usability. This NTFS compression operates in the background, enabling access to files without manual extraction. To enable it, users can right-click on a drive in File Explorer, select Properties, and choose the compression option if the drive uses the NTFS file system. The compression process may take time, as seen when it took about two hours to compress 333GB of data. While drive compression can consume CPU resources and slightly increase loading times, the impact is minimal on modern computers. Users can also selectively compress specific files or folders to manage performance better.

Windows 11 hides a Windows 7 folder that beats the Settings app, and I use it every day

The "God Mode" folder in Windows is a hidden feature that provides a streamlined solution to navigating settings by offering an organized index within a single folder. Users can create this folder by right-clicking on the desktop, creating a new folder, and renaming it to "GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}". This transforms the folder icon to resemble the Control Panel, allowing quick access to various settings. The folder can be pinned to the Start menu or Quick Access for easier accessibility. It serves as a useful tool for users who frequently adjust settings, making tasks like managing USB settings or adjusting processor state limits more efficient.

How to supercharge your Windows 11 PC with this built-in automation tool

Windows 11 includes a Task Scheduler that automates repetitive tasks to enhance productivity. To set up a task, users should open Task Scheduler, select "Create Task," and fill in details under General, Triggers, Actions, Conditions, and Settings. It's important for laptop users to avoid scheduling tasks that run every five minutes to maintain low-power idle states. The "Run with highest privileges" option should be used cautiously for security reasons. Three recommended automations include: 1. Using WinGet to keep software updated with the command winget upgrade --all --silent --accept-package-agreements --accept-source-agreements --disable-interactivity, scheduled weekly. 2. Disabling unnecessary startup applications and launching them with a delayed logon trigger to reduce startup clutter. 3. Automating tasks with PowerShell for file transfers or system maintenance, ensuring they run during idle times or when connected to AC power. Windows also performs some maintenance tasks automatically, such as deleting temporary files and optimizing drives.
