Google Brings Real-Time Visual Assistance to Blind Users on Android

On October 1, 2026, Google launched Guided Vision within its Gemini Live platform, providing real-time, voice-driven visual assistance for individuals who are blind or have low vision. The feature is available on Android devices running Android 9 and above in regions where Gemini Live is accessible. Guided Vision allows users to share their phone's camera feed for spoken descriptions of their environment and responds to follow-up questions, offering verbal cues for better navigation. It was developed in collaboration with Aira and the accessibility community, involving extensive testing with over 1,000 members of Aira’s Trusted Tester network. The technology aims to assist with tasks such as reading fine print, locating objects, and exploring unfamiliar environments. Users can access Guided Vision through the Gemini app, an Android Accessibility shortcut, or Google TalkBack, but it is not a substitute for medical devices or safe travel practices.

5 Open-Source Android Apps to Unlock Your Device

Android manufacturers curate devices, often leading to frustration for users who struggle to find specific settings due to the absence of desired features. The open-source community offers tools to enhance device functionality. MT Manager allows deep app modification directly on devices, providing access to app decompiling and editing without needing a desktop. It requires root permissions for its most powerful features and is not available on Google Play. Install with Options enables users to bypass installation restrictions on Android 7.0 and later, allowing the installation of apps outside the Google Play Store by using shell-level privileges or root access. Canta Debloater helps users safely remove carrier bloatware without root access on devices running Android 9.0 and above, using color-coded safety guidance to assist in the uninstallation process. ColorBlendr offers precise control over Material You color palettes on Android 12 and newer, allowing users to customize colors and themes with a live preview function. It requires elevated access via Root, Shizuku, or Wireless ADB. Kvaesitso Launcher replaces the default home screen with a search-centric interface, streamlining app navigation through a unified search bar that handles queries for apps, contacts, files, and calendar events. It is available on GitHub, F-Droid, and IzzyOnDroid.

Microsoft just rethought its entire AI strategy: What the new Copilot means for Windows & your everyday workflows

Microsoft is evolving its offerings in artificial intelligence, particularly with updates announced at its Copilot event, which signify a shift towards a more integrated Microsoft 365 experience. The latest version of Copilot aims to create a cohesive workspace that connects documents, conversations, data, and tasks, making AI more accessible for everyday users and enterprise customers. CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the importance of keeping humans "in the flow of work" and creating systems that learn continuously. Key features include Autopilot, a digital teammate that manages tasks across Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and other applications, allowing users to focus on strategic initiatives. At the core of these advancements is Microsoft IQ, a unified intelligence layer that connects data and workflows throughout the Microsoft ecosystem. Microsoft is also introducing a plugin registry for custom integrations and implementing FinOps for AI to optimize spending. Regular consumers can access these features based on their M365 Premium or Pro subscriptions, with further developments expected at Microsoft Ignite in November.

Google Messages gets a major gesture and menu refresh

Google Messages is introducing refined gestures to enhance user experience on Android. Long-pressing a message now opens a floating menu with shortcuts for actions like copying, starring, or replying. Users can select specific text snippets instead of copying entire messages. Swiping left reveals message timestamps and encryption statuses, while swiping right allows for instant replies. The long-press menu replaces the top toolbar, providing quick access to functions such as Reply, Forward, Copy, Star, Delete, Select more, and Info. For images, options like Save and Remix are available. The text copying feature allows selection of portions of text, extending to images, videos, links, files, locations, and contact cards. Tapping a message reveals read receipts and timestamps briefly appear after a tap. These features are part of recent builds of Google Messages, including version 2026091003RC02, but the rollout is server-side, so not all devices will receive the updates at the same time.
