Google has designated the Wear OS Clock app exclusively for Pixel smartwatches, discontinuing support for non-Pixel devices. Users with non-Pixel smartwatches will lose access to the app and future updates, and it will no longer be available for download from the Play Store. The Wear OS 6 upgrade is being rolled out to eligible devices, enhancing user experience, with the Pixel Watch 4 already equipped with the new software. Previous models, Pixel Watch 3 and 2, began receiving the update in October. Owners of Pixel Watches will continue to have the Clock app pre-installed and will receive future updates.

Google Clock has released version 8.3, which replaces the cluttered wallpaper-based alarm screen with a solid background for better visibility of time and controls. This change addresses a design flaw from the previous Material 3 Expressive design. The update also simplifies the branding of alarm post-wake actions from "Google Assistant" to "Routines," while maintaining the same functionality. Additionally, a new pulsing clock animation is in development to enhance the visual experience. The update is rolling out via the Play Store over the next few days.

Google has been refining its Android applications with the Material 3 Expressive design. The Google Clock app has reduced support for wallpaper backgrounds to improve the readability of alarm times, reintroducing a solid background for the alarm screen in version 8.3. This change addresses user concerns about visibility against certain backgrounds. The app is also transitioning away from Assistant branding, with routines now simply labeled as “Routines.” Additionally, a new feature involving a pulsing animation for the time display is expected, although the rollout timeline is uncertain.
