Chinese hackers hide malware in Windows and Google Drive to hit targets

Chinese state-sponsored threat actors, specifically a group known as Silver Dragon, have been conducting espionage operations across Southeast Asia and Europe since at least mid-2024. They have targeted government entities in countries such as Russia, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Myanmar, and Malaysia. Silver Dragon is believed to be affiliated with APT41 and primarily uses phishing emails to initiate attacks, often containing weaponized documents or links. They employ a custom backdoor called GearDoor, which utilizes Google Drive for command-and-control operations, allowing them to exfiltrate stolen intelligence. The group also hijacks legitimate Windows services to load malicious code and uses tools like SSHcmd and Cobalt Strike for post-exploitation activities. Their tactics involve blending malicious activities with normal system operations, making detection difficult and increasing their dwell time within targeted networks.

Uninstalling does not delete cloud-stored files, which remain accessible via the OneDrive website or app. Users can prevent OneDrive from enabling Folder Backup during PC setup by acting quickly after the Windows Setup Out of Box Experience (OOBE) and canceling the backup process when prompted. If Folder Backup is already enabled, users can disable it by accessing OneDrive settings and managing backups for the Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders. OneDrive offers only 5 GB of free cloud storage, with additional storage requiring a subscription to Microsoft 365. Users can disable “On this day” memory notifications in OneDrive settings. To move OneDrive to a different disk, users must unlink their account and select a new folder path during re-sign-in.

Before doing so, it's essential to migrate apps and files, securely erase personal data, and reset the operating system. To migrate apps and files, users can utilize the Windows Backup app on their old PC to back up settings and installed apps, as well as personal folders to OneDrive. Upon setting up the new PC with the same Microsoft account, users can restore their profile. It's also important to compile a list of legacy software and ensure necessary activation codes are available. For data backup, users can use cloud storage services or create an image backup on a removable hard drive. To securely wipe old data, Windows 11 Pro users can enable BitLocker Disk Encryption, while Windows 11 Home users should delete sensitive files and use the command cipher /w:c: to wipe the disk space. For preparing the old PC for a new owner, users can choose one of three options to install a new copy of Windows 11: 1. Reset - Navigate to Settings > System > Recovery and select "Reset PC," choosing "Remove everything" and either Cloud Download or Local Reinstall. 2.
