Several navigation apps have emerged as alternatives to Google Maps, particularly for Android Auto users. Sygic requires a Premium+ subscription priced at .99 for three months or .99 for a year to access features like real-time traffic alerts and voice-guided navigation. The free version lacks voice guidance, which many users find limiting. Magic Earth offers Android Auto connectivity through a paid plan costing .76 annually, providing features such as offline maps and personalized voice guidance. Its free version includes basic navigation tools, but users have reported bugs and performance issues. Here WeGo is completely free and fully compatible with Android Auto, offering route options, estimated travel times, and nearby amenities. However, users have noted inconsistent GPS accuracy.

However, a recent exploration of lesser-known apps has revealed a treasure trove of tools that can significantly enhance the driving experience. For instance, Fuelio has proven invaluable in managing fuel expenses, while SpotHero simplifies the often daunting task of finding parking in urban areas. Venturing beyond the Play Store's main offerings can lead to discovering hidden gems that elevate daily commutes. Fuelio keeps my car's gas tank full Since switching from an EV to a gas car, this app has really come in handy Having driven an electric vehicle for the past five years, transitioning to a gas car has been an adjustment. My family recently required a second vehicle, and given the rising costs of electric cars, we opted for a traditional gas model. While my Kia K4 Hatchback is efficient, I've found myself refueling more frequently than anticipated, prompting a renewed focus on gas prices. Fuelio has emerged as a reliable companion in this regard. The app not only locates nearby gas stations but also displays their prices, often revealing a price difference of around [cyberseo_openai model="gpt-4o-mini" prompt="Rewrite a news story for a business publication, in a calm style with creativity and flair based on text below, making sure it reads like human-written text in a natural way. Text: When most people think of Android Auto, well-known apps like Google Maps, Waze, and Spotify probably come to mind instantly, but over the past few weeks, I've started using a few lesser-known apps that make my life significantly easier. For example, Fuelio helps me stay on top of filling up my car, and SpotHero has my back when it comes to finding parking in the city. Sometimes it's worth doing a bit of extra research and scrolling past the Play Store's front page to uncover hidden Android Auto gems that can make your day-to-day drives better. Fuelio keeps my car's gas tank full Since switching from an EV to a gas car, this app has really come in handy For the past roughly five years, I've driven an electric vehicle. While I still have my EV, my family recently needed a second vehicle, and given the skyrocketing cost of electric cars right now, we went the old-school gas car route this time. While my Kia K4 Hatchback is pretty great on gas, I've needed to fill it up a bit more than I expected. This has me thinking about the cost of gas again for the first time in several years. When it comes to finding the cheapest gas in my area, Fuelio has been really useful. The app not only helps me find nearby gas stations but also shows their prices. Usually, the cost difference between gas stations is about $0.10, but in today's world, even saving a few dollars is worth it. Fuelio also lets you log your mileage so you can see how much mileage you're getting from your vehicle. I haven't tried this feature yet, but I plan to soon. Posts By  Rich Edmonds SpotHero helps me find parking when I need it If you're headed into a major city's downtown core, this app is worth trying If you've ever headed into the busy downtown core of a major city when there's an event happening, you'll know that finding parking often feels impossible. In most cases, you end up parking in the first lot you see and likely overpay considerably. This is where SpotHero comes in. The app helps you find available parking spots in garages and surface lots, and even lets you purchase a spot in advance. That way, all you need to do is pull into the lot, and you're good to go. If you're a big planner like me, it's the type of feature you'll probably come to rely on very quickly. I've only used SpotHero a few times over the past few weeks, but it's really giving me welcome peace of mind that I've grown to appreciate. It's worth noting that the Android Auto version of SpotHero doesn't let you book a parking spot directly; you'll need to use the Android app for that. Unlike other weather apps, which generally show the temperature and whether it's raining or snowing, Weather & Radar gives you access to a live weather radar on your car's infotainment screen. This means that if you're on the road and see ominous clouds looming ahead, you can take a look at Weather & Radar to see if that storm is actually going to hit you. If you're on a road trip, this can come in handy in terms of helping you decide whether it makes sense to pull off at an upcoming rest stop for some food or keep barreling ahead to beat the storm. Since I haven't been on a road trip recently, I actually haven't needed to use Weather & Radar yet. Still, I've added it to my Android Auto app rotation because I know I'll be glad I have it installed at some point, especially as weather becomes increasingly more erratic where I live. If I'm driving my EV and need to stop for a quick charge on a longer drive, I always turn to PlugShare. The crowdsourced app shows nearby charging stations, how fast they charge, what network they're on, and the types of chargers they offer, including whether they support J1772, CCS1, NACS/J3400, or CHAdeMO. I've really come to appreciate PlugShare's user reviews of chargers. In my area, there aren't many chargers, and those that are available are often either broken or charge very slowly. For example, a 50kW charger might only charge my Ioniq 5 at about 25kW consistently, depending on the outside temperature. This allows me to avoid wasting time and actually find the best-working charger. On top of that, I can see how much a charge costs and which network it's on. EV charging is rarely expensive, but it's still nice to know what to expect in terms of price, since it can vary. Users of the Google Pixel 11 have reported a glitch that results in the loss of access to a significant update for Google Maps, which includes immersive navigation features such as advanced 3D maps and contextual information. This issue arises because the rollout of the immersive navigation feature is managed through a server-side flag based on device ID, causing the Pixel 11 to re-enter the queue for the update rather than receiving it immediately. Google has not yet issued a fix for this problem, and the immersive update for Google Maps is currently being rolled out in stages across the United States.

Logan Smith, an 18-year-old from Trenton, has been recreating iconic sites from Pictou County in Minecraft since July 18. He has already recreated several locations, including the Express Yourself Cafe, Domino’s, and Tim Horton’s. Smith shares his work on Facebook, receiving positive feedback and requests from the community. He plans to continue his project until he exhausts his passion or completes all known spots in the county, with upcoming projects including Trenton Town Hall and Sparkles Arcade/Appleseed Modern Diner. Smith uses Google Maps for reference, and his most challenging creation has been the Trenton Tim Horton’s, which required a visit for reference images. He aims to highlight familiar locations that evoke a sense of belonging rather than create an accurate map of Pictou County. Smith hopes his project will inspire others to embrace creativity in an age dominated by artificial intelligence.

Google Maps' full dark mode offers a more comfortable look for users, replacing bright maps with a darker, soothing appearance. This feature is available on almost every Android phone and can help reduce power usage on OLED devices. Users can choose between "Always dark theme" or "Same theme as device" settings. While not as significant as the Pixel 10's exclusive feature, dark mode enhances day-to-day visual comfort during navigation.

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8, with pre-orders underway. A new feature in One UI 9 stable allows individual zoom controls for apps, enhancing user experience. This capability, initially found in the firmware of the Z Fold 8 Ultra, is now available as a Labs option on the standard Z Fold 8, accessible through Settings -> Advanced features -> Labs. Users can choose from five different zoom levels for each app, although Samsung's own apps are not currently supported. Testing shows varying results in different applications, with Chrome and Google Maps exhibiting different scaling behaviors. There are questions about whether this feature will remain exclusive to the Z Fold 8 and if it will be available across all devices in the Z8 lineup after retail sales begin on August 7.
