Microsoft has announced that Skype will be officially discontinued on May 5, 2025. Existing users are encouraged to transition to Microsoft Teams or export their data before the shutdown. Skype was founded in 2003 and became popular for free calls and affordable rates for calls to traditional phones. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011, but its attempts to modernize the service were unsuccessful. Microsoft has shifted its focus to Microsoft Teams, which launched in 2016, while Skype lost its popularity, especially with the rise of Zoom during the pandemic.

Google is developing a feature called "Pixel Besties" to consolidate conversations from various messaging applications into a single interface. It is expected to debut with the upcoming Pixel QPR update, with WhatsApp likely being the first third-party app to participate. The feature may be part of a dedicated application called "Pixel Relationship," which could include a home screen widget for easy access. Users will be able to curate a list of important contacts, and all interactions with designated "Pixel Besties" will be aggregated in one space. The latest beta version of WhatsApp suggests a central hub for this feature, supported by a new API for communication between apps. Initially, it will integrate data from Google Messages and WhatsApp, with potential future additions from other platforms like Messenger.

Google has introduced the Deep Research feature as part of the Gemini Advanced suite, designed to assist users in conducting in-depth research. This feature is now available on the free Gemini Android app, allowing users to generate comprehensive research reports by selecting "1.5 pro with Deep Research" from the app's drop-down menu. Deep Research enables users to ask specific questions, after which the AI creates a multi-step research plan that can be approved or modified. The AI then conducts web searches and compiles a detailed report with links to original sources. Users can refine their findings with follow-up questions and export the final report to Google Docs. Gemini Advanced is part of the Google One AI Premium plan, which includes various benefits and a two-month free trial for new users.

Google Chrome is enhancing its media recording capabilities by adding support for the HEVC codec, which will improve video recording quality and reduce file sizes for web-based video conferencing. The transition from older codecs like H.264, VP8, and VP9 to HEVC is underway, with recent code commits indicating progress in integrating HEVC support into Chrome on Windows 11. Users can test this functionality by enabling an experimental flag. The new feature will allow video recording in MP4 and MKV formats, but it is currently disabled by default and requires manual activation. Basic HEVC encoding is supported, but hardware compatibility is not verified, meaning encoding may fail on unsupported devices. Developers are advised to check hardware capabilities before using the MediaRecorder instance. Additionally, Chrome is developing a modern Task Manager for managing browser activities.

Microsoft is refining Windows 11 with Build 26120.2702, introducing a feature that allows multiple applications to access the webcam simultaneously, responding to user feedback. This functionality is being trialed by Windows Insider program participants and enables activities like video conferencing on Google Meet while streaming on platforms like Twitch. Users previously had to choose one application for webcam access. The exact limit on the number of applications that can use the webcam concurrently is unclear, but excessive usage may affect system performance. Additionally, Microsoft is developing further webcam settings for adjusting resolution, frame rate, and media type. This update reflects a shift towards user-requested features rather than unwanted elements.
