Android has introduced a native, automatic backup feature for the Downloads folder with the February Play System update, allowing users to back up files to Google Drive. Changes made after the backup will not sync automatically, and some file types may remain unsupported. This update addresses the vulnerability of orphaned files like PDFs and invoices, which were previously at risk of loss during factory resets or device changes. The new feature enhances user experience by reducing the likelihood of losing important documents.

Google is introducing a new native color picker tool called "EyeDropper," expected to launch with Android 17. This tool will provide a system-wide API that allows apps to let users select colors from their screens and retrieve their values. Currently, Android does not have a built-in color picker, which EyeDropper aims to address. The EyeDropper API will enable developers to integrate a color picker into their applications easily, streamlining development and reducing app sizes. It operates through a specific Intent (android.intent.action.OPENEYEDROPPER) that opens the EyeDropper app to capture the current screen. Users can select colors using a cursor and apply their choices back to the originating app. The EyeDropper app will also adapt its interface based on connected peripherals, switching between desktop and touchscreen modes. While it has appeared in the Android Canary update, it is not expected to be included in the upcoming Android 16 updates, with the earliest availability likely coinciding with Android 17. There are no official plans for rolling out EyeDropper to existing devices via a Google Play System Update.

Google has introduced the Android System Key Verifier app as part of its latest Google Play System update to enhance user security in digital communication. The app allows users to confirm the identity of messaging recipients by scanning a QR code, generating a unique key, and requesting a security code for verification. If there is a discrepancy, the device will issue an alert. The app utilizes the Contact Keys feature for securely storing end-to-end encryption keys and is currently available on devices like the Pixel 6, although testing has been limited due to a lack of compatible applications. The Contact Keys feature was initially unveiled with Android 15, and its integration into Google Play Services allows all devices running Android 10 and above to benefit from this security measure.

Google has introduced a backup and restore feature in the Health Connect app, allowing users to export their health and fitness data to Google Drive or other cloud storage providers. This feature addresses the previous lack of backup options, enabling users to safeguard their data when losing devices or transitioning to new ones. The backup and restore menu is located within the Health Connect settings, allowing for scheduled exports on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, stored in a ZIP file at a user-chosen location. However, early testing has revealed that some exported files may be empty. The feature is available on devices running Android 14 and later, as well as the latest version of the Health Connect app compatible with Android 9 or later. Feedback from users is encouraged to improve the experience.
