Google introduced Android 12L four years ago, tailored for larger screens on foldable phones and tablets. This led to optimizations in applications, with Google and Samsung enhancing their offerings, and third-party developers creating apps for these devices. The upcoming version 51.2 of Google Play Services will feature a badge identifying apps optimized for big-screen devices, helping users find suitable applications. This badge aims to increase visibility for these apps and encourage developer investment in the big-screen market. Additionally, Google plans to launch an Android-powered version of ChromeOS later this year, further promoting the use of big-screen devices.

Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft has seen a resurgence following the less favorable Shadowlands expansion, attributed to a structured roadmap that contrasts with previous content droughts. Recent expansions like Dragonflight, The War Within, and Midnight have received positive community feedback. However, patch 12.0.5 faced issues with bugs and design flaws, raising concerns about Blizzard's commitment to its release schedule over quality assurance. Historically, players have experienced long waits for updates, such as a 400-day gap during the Warlords of Draenor expansion. A 2022 Google Play report indicates that many MMO players are aged 25-44, suggesting a preference for a more measured content delivery approach. The text argues that World of Warcraft does not need to strictly follow the seasonal live service model and could benefit from a slower, more deliberate approach to updates.

McAfee researchers discovered a complex Android rootkit campaign, dubbed Operation NoVoice, that infiltrated 50 applications on Google Play, exploiting vulnerabilities in the kernel that had been patched but not uninstalled. The malware was resilient enough to survive factory resets and was concealed within seemingly benign apps, which collectively garnered 2.3 million downloads. The malicious payload was hidden in the com.facebook.utils package and used steganography to embed an encrypted payload within a PNG image. The malware conducted multiple checks to avoid detection and established contact with a command-and-control server, polling for exploit packages every 60 seconds. It utilized 22 distinct exploits, including vulnerabilities that had received patches between 2016 and 2021. The malware disabled SELinux enforcement and installed a persistent rootkit that could survive factory resets. Google confirmed the removal of the infected apps but noted that users who had already downloaded them remained at risk, especially if their devices were running unpatched Android versions. McAfee advised affected users to treat their devices as compromised and consider professional inspection or hardware-level storage wiping for remediation.
