Microsoft has extended support for Windows 10 applications and services until August 2026, allowing users an additional year to transition to Windows 11. Support was originally set to end in October 2025. During this extension, Microsoft will stop new feature updates for MS Office applications on Windows 10, but critical security updates will continue until October 2028. Windows 10 will cease receiving software updates, including security patches, on October 14, 2025. Microsoft is offering free extended security updates for users who activate Windows Backup or choose a paid service. Windows 11 features a new interface, improved window organization tools, enhanced multi-monitor support, and integrates Microsoft’s AI assistant, Copilot. It also includes gaming enhancements like DirectStorage and Auto HDR, and supports Android apps through the Microsoft Store.

Security researcher Marco Figueroa revealed vulnerabilities in AI models, specifically GPT-4, that can be exploited through simple user prompts. He described an incident where researchers tricked ChatGPT into revealing a Windows product key by using a 'guessing game' prompt, bypassing safety measures. The phrase "I give up" was identified as a trigger that led the AI to disclose sensitive information. Although the product keys were not unique and had been shared online, the vulnerabilities could allow malicious actors to extract personally identifiable information or share harmful content. Figueroa recommends that AI developers implement logic-level safeguards to detect deceptive framing and consider social engineering tactics in their security measures.

Microsoft has upgraded its Copilot AI assistant by integrating OpenAI's GPT-4o model, enhancing its image generation capabilities within Microsoft 365 applications like Word, Excel, and Outlook. Users can now create intricate visuals by describing their desired images. Copilot can draft documents, analyze data, create presentations, manage emails, and now generate high-quality, photorealistic images from text prompts. This feature allows for the creation and modification of custom graphics without external design software. The GPT-4o image generation capabilities were initially rolled out to enterprise users and are now available to the general public. This enhancement positions Microsoft Copilot ahead of other creative tools that use older DALL-E models, aiming to compete with industry leaders like OpenAI and Google Gemini.

Many organizations are hesitant to upgrade to Windows 11, with a global adoption rate of only 38% since its launch in 2021. This reluctance is due to companies wanting to extend the lifespan of existing devices, despite the risks associated with inaction. Microsoft will soon discontinue free security patching for Windows 10, leading to potential costs for continued support. Windows 11 has been shown to reduce security incidents by 58% and decrease firmware attacks by more than threefold. Organizations that delay the transition may hinder their competitiveness and face employee dissatisfaction, particularly in sectors like healthcare. The end of support for Windows 10 presents a crucial opportunity for companies to reassess their IT infrastructure and invest in higher-performing technology.

Developers are exploring new methods to benchmark generative AI models, with one initiative being the Minecraft Benchmark (MC-Bench), a platform for head-to-head competitions among AI models that generate unique Minecraft creations. Users vote on the performances without knowing which AI created each entry. The project, created by 12th-grade student Adi Singh, leverages Minecraft's universal recognition to evaluate AI capabilities. MC-Bench currently has eight volunteer contributors and has received support from major AI companies like Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and Alibaba. The focus is on simple builds, with plans to scale to more complex tasks. MC-Bench requires models to write code for requested builds, making it easier for users to assess the quality of creations visually. Singh believes the scores from MC-Bench provide meaningful insights into AI performance compared to traditional text-based benchmarks.
