Google is considering a new initiative called Aluminium, which aims to adapt Android's features for laptops and desktops, focusing on ARM architecture and improving multitasking, keyboard-and-mouse input, and file management. Android has over 3 billion active devices globally, while ChromeOS has a low market share in the PC sector. Android has evolved with updates like Android 12L, enhancing usability on large screens, and real-world implementations like Samsung DeX show its potential as a desktop OS. However, challenges remain regarding app usability on larger displays, and improvements in performance, security, and enterprise readiness are needed. Google plans to develop a refined Desktop Mode, implement UX guidelines, establish a native Linux workspace, enhance file access, integrate audio features, and collaborate with OEMs for compatible hardware.

Google is enhancing its Linux Terminal app for Android with an upgrade that will utilize the device's GPU instead of the CPU for running graphical Linux applications. This update aims to improve performance and battery efficiency. The app, initially launched earlier this year, supports command-line Linux programs and has been expanded to include GUI applications. Currently, it relies on a software renderer, Lavapipe, which has led to performance issues. Google is testing a technology called gfxstream, which allows graphics instructions to be transmitted directly to the GPU, potentially improving the speed of Linux GUI applications. Evidence of this feature was found in the Android Canary 2509 release, where a hidden "Graphics Acceleration" option was discovered, indicating the presence of a "GPU-accelerated renderer" toggle believed to activate gfxstream. This option is not yet fully operational. Once implemented, GPU support is expected to significantly enhance the performance of Linux applications on Android.

The author experimented with Bazzite, a SteamOS clone, on their Asus ROG Ally and is considering installing it on their primary desktop gaming PC due to dissatisfaction with Windows 11. Bazzite offers a console-like user interface and features tailored for gaming, particularly benefiting AMD hardware, while Nvidia users face limitations with beta support. Testing Discord on Bazzite yielded mixed results, with issues in streaming that are crucial for the author's gaming experience. The author appreciates the potential of Bazzite's Quick Resume feature and the appeal of a user interface similar to popular consoles. They express hope for improved Nvidia support and functionality to facilitate a transition away from Windows 11.

Nvidia will cease new Game Ready driver development for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta-based GPUs after a final driver release in October 2025. These GPUs will receive quarterly security updates until October 2028. The GTX 10-series, particularly the GTX 1080 Ti, remains popular in the gaming market, while GTX 9-series cards are becoming rare. Ray-tracing technology is increasingly required in new games, but Pascal and earlier GPUs cannot utilize DLSS effectively. However, Pascal users can use Intel's XeSS DP4a model for AI-powered upscaling in compatible titles. Nvidia will provide Game Ready drivers for supported cards on Windows 10 until October 2026, despite Microsoft's end-of-support for the OS on October 14.

Nvidia will provide quarterly security updates for its Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta GPUs until October 2028, ensuring users can continue to use these older graphics cards without security vulnerabilities. The company previously announced that CUDA support for these architectures has reached "feature complete" status, marking the end of further development. As of June 2025, Windows 10 powers over a third of PCs surveyed in the Steam Hardware Survey, while Windows 11 has over 60 percent market share.
