Choosing a database instance size without prior knowledge of the workload can lead to inefficiencies and excessive compute usage. Lakebase Postgres addresses this with an autoscaling feature that eliminates manual sizing, utilizing in-place VM resizing and a monitoring algorithm for CPU, memory, and working set size. Lakebase Postgres separates compute and storage layers, allowing independent resizing of compute nodes without affecting the database. The autoscaling algorithm relies on three signals: CPU load (cpuGoalCU), memory use (memGoalCU), and compute-cache working set size (lfcGoalCU). The CPU load is monitored every five seconds, aiming to maintain it at or below 90% capacity. Memory usage is tracked at two frequencies: overall memory every five seconds and Postgres-specific memory every 100 milliseconds, with a goal to keep usage below 75% of allocated RAM. The compute cache evaluates active data access efficiency, adjusting size based on workload. The working set is estimated using a modified HyperLogLog algorithm that records timestamps for page accesses, allowing for distinct page estimates over various time frames. The algorithm projects future working-set growth to allocate sufficient cache while capping it at 75% of RAM. Resizing the compute involves four components: the autoscaler-agent, vm-monitor, Kubernetes scheduler, and NeonVM. Scaling up occurs when any of the three goals indicate a need for more resources, while scaling down includes verification to ensure sufficient memory remains for operations. Timely adjustments in both directions are prioritized to minimize costs.

Windows 10 will receive support until October 2027 under the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, with approximately 30% of PCs still operating on this system. Nvidia will stop releasing Game Ready Drivers for Windows 10 in October 2026, and from November 2026, users will not receive game-related fixes or optimizations. Security updates will remain available until at least October 2029, but the lack of patches for new bugs may affect gaming experiences. HP reports that around 30% of PCs are still running Windows 10, and the company expects these users to transition to Windows 11 or invest in new hardware. Microsoft acknowledges that the growth of Windows 11 has slowed and is focusing on enhancing its features.

The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is gaining popularity among developers, with GitHub introducing experimental support for WSL in its Copilot desktop application, allowing Linux environments to be used directly within Windows. Google is also integrating WSL support into its Antigravity development platform, marking a shift in its approach to Windows support. Rody Davis from Google confirmed that both WSL and native Windows support are being developed for Antigravity, which will enable file operations and shell commands in a Linux environment. GitHub Copilot now allows users to create sessions inside WSL, enhancing the development experience by enabling real-time interaction with projects in a WSL environment. Additionally, Microsoft is focusing on improving Windows for developers, with initiatives like Coreutils for Windows and the open-sourcing of WinUI, while Ubuntu is reportedly gaining traction on Windows 11.

In June, Microsoft and Nvidia introduced the Windows on Arm-based RTX Spark chipsets, signaling a shift in personal computing. New PCs, including models from Microsoft’s Surface line, are expected soon, driven by increasing customer demand for efficient Windows on Arm devices. This interest follows Apple's announcement of its Arm-based chips, prompting Microsoft to adapt to the changing market. Klaus Diaconu from Microsoft indicated that Nvidia RTX Spark PCs from manufacturers like ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI are set to launch in fall 2026. The growth of the Windows app ecosystem is also noted, with over 7,000 verified apps and games available for Windows on Arm. Microsoft’s App Assure program collaborates with developers to enhance application representation in this ecosystem. Significant advancements in compatibility have been reported across various app categories since the last update. Diaconu emphasized that Windows on Arm is now characterized by a growing ecosystem of PCs and applications that meet consumer needs. Microsoft has not explicitly referenced "Windows 11" in its communications, focusing instead on the "Copilot+ PC" narrative.

Microsoft is re-optimizing Windows memory performance for devices with 8GB or more RAM, moving away from its previous approach that treated 8GB as entry-level. The company is recognizing that hardware growth can no longer mask systemic inefficiencies, particularly with the rise of AI requiring substantial resources. Windows has accumulated background services and frameworks without a cohesive resource management strategy, leading to inefficiencies. Compatibility with legacy systems has complicated resource management, while commercial pressures have contributed to system bloat. The reliance on web technologies, particularly WebView2, has further increased memory consumption. Microsoft aims for Windows to achieve integration similar to macOS but faces challenges due to its diverse ecosystem. The demand for memory driven by AI has made system-level optimization a pressing issue, prompting Microsoft to adjust its guidance on memory requirements. The company must balance modernization with maintaining compatibility with older applications and drivers as it adapts to new computing demands.
