In August 2026, Google Play announced new performance requirements for memory management that will be enforced starting February 2027. These requirements include metrics for dynamic memory usage, bitmap memory, and DEX code optimization. Applications that exceed these thresholds may face reduced visibility and publishing capabilities on the platform. Dynamic memory usage is defined as the sum of anonymous RSS and swap, excluding file-backed data. Google is focused on whether applications retain non-visible bitmaps and requires at least 25% coverage in DEX optimization. Memory issues can be difficult to reproduce, and developers are encouraged to use Android Studio’s Memory Profiler to investigate memory growth. A thorough investigation involves monitoring memory changes, taking heap dumps, and understanding reference paths. Bitmap memory should be carefully managed, as the runtime cost of images can exceed their file size. Google will provide real-world memory metrics through the Play Console, and teams are advised to establish memory budgets and perform pre-release checks to identify potential issues before they lead to out-of-memory (OOM) crashes.

Gemini has launched on Android Auto, but user feedback has been largely negative. Google is working on improvements, including a new destination card in Google Maps that will utilize Gemini's AI to provide information about destinations, such as reviews, essential details, practical tips, and visuals. The user interface is still being optimized, and there is no guarantee that the feature will be finalized for public release. Users have reported issues with Gemini, including problems with making calls and sending texts, distractions from excessive chatter, and app crashes. The latest updates were noted in Android Auto version 17.8, which is still in development.

Google has discontinued its Pixel Studio image generation feature. Pixel phone users can still create custom stickers using the Google Photos app and other alternatives like the Gemini app and WhatsApp. To create a sticker in Google Photos, users need to locate an image, open a chat in Google Messages, tap the smiley face icon, select Photomoji, and send the sticker. The Gemini app allows users to transform images into stickers by providing specific instructions, though the output will have an opaque background. In WhatsApp, users can convert images into stickers by selecting the stickers option and tapping the "create sticker" button. Users are advised to update their phones and applications for the latest features.
