Russia's state-backed messaging application, MAX, has facilitated over 1,000 messages between the International Space Station (ISS) and Earth. This was stated by Dmitry Bakanov, head of Roscosmos, during an event in Moscow. Cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov is using MAX to communicate with the Roscosmos press office. The application allows developers to create their own sticker packs, with participation from celebrities and bloggers. MAX is promoted through mandatory pre-installation on devices sold in Russia, with some state functions requiring its use. Critics have described this rollout as coercive, viewing it as part of a strategy to promote domestic digital services. Russia recently launched 16 serial-production satellites for the Rassvet broadband system, marketed as an alternative to Starlink, although its current launch capabilities are limited.

Over 500 million Windows 10 PC owners are unable to upgrade to Windows 11 and may face security vulnerabilities. Google is offering a complimentary upgrade to ChromeOS Flex for these users, along with a reusable USB Kit priced at approximately €3 to facilitate the transition. Support for Windows 10 ended in October 2022, prompting users to either invest in new devices or continue using an outdated system. Microsoft is providing a free extended support update for Windows 10 users until October 2023, but many remain on the unsupported operating system due to slow adoption of Windows 11. Transitioning to ChromeOS Flex can reduce energy consumption by an average of 19% compared to other operating systems, promoting device longevity and reducing electronic waste.

Google is exploring the integration of wallpaper-based theming within its Gemini feature in the Google app, aiming to unify the visual experience across applications and phase out the white-and-blue color scheme. The experimentation is underway with version 17.12.51 of the Google app, where users have noticed changes in the Gemini overlay that adapts to the user's wallpaper. The overlay now features a subtly tinted bar and a darker button for Gemini Live, reflecting the system's theme. However, other elements like button shapes remain unchanged. The main Gemini app still displays its traditional colors, indicating that the rollout of the theming feature is in its early stages. Insights from an APK teardown suggest potential future features, but some may not reach public release.

Microsoft's new Copilot application for Windows 11 operates as a hybrid web application that essentially launches Microsoft Edge, functioning more as a rebranded browser wrapper than a standalone AI assistant. The installation replaces the previous native Copilot app with a version that includes Microsoft Edge files, such as msedge.exe and msedge.dll, within a WebView2 container. A user demonstrated that renaming the Copilot executable to msedge.exe allowed it to launch Microsoft Edge directly. Microsoft has expressed a goal to develop 100% native applications for Windows 11, but it is unclear if this will apply to the current Copilot.

The Kremlin is promoting its state-backed messenger service, MAX, but many Russians are skeptical about it due to privacy and functionality concerns. The initiative occurs alongside extensive internet censorship and the blocking of popular messaging platforms like Telegram. While some users have adapted to MAX, the majority remain cautious. Officials justify MAX as essential for national security, arguing that foreign apps pose risks. The parent company, VK, claims 107 million users, expanding its reach beyond Russia. Opposition activists warn of potential state surveillance and user data access. Many users feel compelled to download MAX due to state requirements but prefer other options like Telegram. There is a strong sentiment among the public that app usage should be a personal choice, with critics expressing discontent over the government's approach to mandating downloads.
