My new favourite Tolkien game is free, has over 40 years of history, and would run on a toaster

The game restricts character options to races aligned with Tolkien's lore, including the Noldor, Sindar, Naugrim, and Edain, prioritizing immersion over balance. Players encounter challenges reminiscent of classic rogue-like gameplay while navigating Morgoth's domain, battling orcs and discovering mythical weapons. Sil-Q emphasizes storytelling and community engagement within the gaming realm.

The voice of Lady D and Orin the Red will be back for the next D&D videogame

Baldur's Gate 3 showcases the successful adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons principles into a video game RPG. Wizards of the Coast is developing a new title called Warlock, a third-person action-adventure game inspired by God of War, through its internal studio, Invoke. Maggie Robertson will voice the protagonist's patron, Tasha, who is an archfey and will grant players eldritch abilities. Tricia Helfer is also involved in the game. Gameplay is expected to be revealed at Gamescom, scheduled for August 26–30 in Cologne.

Hotline Miami-esque twin-stick roguelite OTXO is free on the Epic Games Store

Bethesda Has a New Logo to Celebrate Its 40th Anniversary — and It Harkens Back to the Studio’s Old Terminator

Bethesda has introduced a new logo to celebrate its 40th anniversary, reflecting on its history and hinting at future projects. The studio has a legacy that includes significant titles such as The Elder Scrolls: Arena (1994) and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996), as well as several games in The Terminator franchise, including The Terminator: Future Shock (1995) and Skynet (1996). The Elder Scrolls 6 is projected for release in 2028, and Bethesda is also working on Fallout 5, remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, an upcoming Fallout title from Obsidian, additional DLC for Starfield, and ongoing enhancements for Fallout 76. The new logo does not indicate a revival of The Terminator games.

Corsair Cove review

Corsair Cove, a pirate-themed city builder, will be released on July 31, 2026. It is published by Hooded Horse and developed by Limbic Entertainment. The game features a setting where pirates escape from a prison ship to build a colony on a deserted island with a skull-shaped mountain. It offers a lighthearted atmosphere with activities like drinking rum and dancing with pigs. Corsair Cove is distinct from Tropico 2: Pirate Cove and incorporates elements reminiscent of Fabledom and logistics puzzles similar to Whiskerwood or Factorio. The game is reviewed on high-end hardware, including the RTX 4090 and Intel i9-13900k, and is also confirmed to be playable on the Steam Deck.

Speaking of Matt Damon, there’s a new survival game out this week on Steam where you’re stranded on Mars and have to grow potatoes to survive

Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey is boosting Matt Damon's career. The game Sol One, developed by yeetgench, is inspired by themes of survival similar to those in Damon's role in The Martian. In Sol One, players navigate a Martian landscape, scavenging resources and cultivating food, particularly potatoes, to survive. Unlike the film, the game's protagonist must rely on their ingenuity to escape without waiting for rescue. Players will mine materials like iron, copper, and uranium to build a rocket to return to Earth. The game includes automation features, allowing players to use rovers for resource gathering. Sol One aims for a grounded, science-driven survival experience, featuring realistic weather patterns and dynamic challenges. Early access for the game launches on Steam on July 30.

Final Fantasy 14 has finally added the class I’m always asking for: a viking with two shields, laser cannons, and Wolverine claws

Today in Apple history: Windows scores big victory over Mac

On July 25, 1989, Apple faced a legal defeat against Microsoft in a copyright infringement lawsuit concerning the "look and feel" of the Macintosh and Windows operating system. Apple filed 189 counts of infringement related to Windows 2.0.3, but the judge dismissed 179 of these claims, allowing Windows to grow rapidly. The origins of the conflict began when Microsoft proposed a licensing agreement to Apple in 1985, which was rejected. Following this, Microsoft launched Windows 1.0 in November 1985, leading to tensions as Windows 2.0 more closely resembled the Macintosh interface. Apple filed a lawsuit on March 17, 1988, claiming copyright violations. The judge ruled that the existing licensing agreement covered many elements of Windows, contributing to a long-standing rivalry between the two companies and establishing a legal foundation for Windows' dominance in the 1990s.
