Users of Android 17 have reported that home screen widgets are disappearing after the latest stable update, specifically on devices with a work profile. Google is aware of the issue and is working on a fix, which may be included in the next month's security update. Currently, there is no effective workaround other than removing the work profile, which allows users to restore their widgets by restarting the device and re-adding them.

Google, Honor, OPlus, Samsung, Transsion, vivo, and Xiaomi are key players in enhancing app distribution platforms. Google is introducing new APIs to simplify the registration process for developers, including the Android Developer ID Status API and the Android Developer Console API. This month, Google will implement a new system service (com.google.android.verifier) on Android 8 or later devices to restrict the installation of unverified applications, although it will remain inactive until verification is launched in specific regions. In July, new developer APIs will roll out, and testing for "limited distribution" accounts will begin, allowing hobbyists to share apps without fees or ID verification on up to 20 devices. By August, an advanced app verification flow will be globally accessible, allowing users to bypass verification through a complex process. In September, Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand will start verifying app installation status, with plans for expanded developer verification by 2027.

Microsoft resolved an installation issue affecting the June 2026 security updates (KB5094122) on Windows Server 2016 systems that had not previously installed the KB5087537 update, which was a prerequisite. Users had encountered 0x80070002 or FILENOTFOUND errors. Microsoft acknowledged the problem and confirmed that affected devices should no longer experience installation failures for the June 2026 update. Additionally, Microsoft fixed a similar issue with the May 2026 Windows 11 security update (KB5089549) that resulted in 0x800f0922 errors due to insufficient space on the EFI System Partition. They also warned users about potential installation issues with error codes 0x80073712 or 0x800f0993 on devices upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. Furthermore, Microsoft addressed a boot issue for Windows Server 2025 devices after the April 2026 update and a bug affecting installation failures for updates since May 2025 using the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA). Lastly, they are investigating a separate issue preventing third-party applications from launching essential Office programs after the June 2026 updates.

Interactions with antivirus software occur during installation and when issues arise, while the software operates quietly in the background. Modern antivirus solutions continuously monitor for threats using various detection methods, including real-time scanning, which actively scrutinizes files as they are downloaded or accessed. The signature database is essential for identifying malware by comparing files against known signatures, but it can only detect documented threats. Heuristic detection and behavioral analysis help catch unknown malware by evaluating suspicious characteristics and monitoring file actions during execution. Sandboxing allows suspicious files to run in a controlled environment, logging their behavior to determine if they are malicious. Quarantine neutralizes threats by locking files in a secure location, allowing users to review them before deletion. Full scans are resource-intensive and can slow down system performance, while real-time scanning is less demanding. Users can schedule scans during idle times, exclude trusted folders, or consider cloud-based solutions to mitigate performance impacts.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that The White House app will be automatically installed on all official government devices. The app, which serves as a wrapper for the official White House website, provides access to official communications but has raised security and privacy concerns due to its use of code from Elfsight, a Russian company. Elfsight previously exposed personal information of some White House staffers, and the app has been flagged for sharing sensitive user data with third-party services. Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has begun automatically installing the app on all FAA-issued iPhones and iPads.

The landscape of online security has evolved significantly, with deepfake technology introducing new challenges. Users must be vigilant against both traditional malware and convincing fake images and videos. Antivirus software developers are enhancing their products by integrating cloud-based AI for better threat detection. For users with computers featuring neural processing units (NPUs), local solutions are available, such as Norton’s Deepfake Protection, which analyzes synthetic voices and images to flag potential threats. This feature operates in the background, providing peace of mind during online interactions. Norton 360 includes options for Deepfake Protection, Safe Web, and Safe SMS, but requires sufficient system resources to function effectively. Running this protection on older laptops may hinder performance, making NPUs a worthwhile investment for enhanced security against deepfakes and other online threats.

Security researchers at Zimperium have identified a new Android banking trojan named “Rokarolla,” which threatens users of over 200 banking and cryptocurrency applications. It is distributed through spoofed websites, third-party app stores, and social media, but has not been found on the Google Play Store or other official Android repositories. Rokarolla requests extensive permissions, particularly concerning Accessibility services, SMS, calls, and notifications. Its capabilities include accessing WhatsApp contacts, capturing keystrokes, recording the screen, blocking incoming calls, and sending screenshots. Zimperium has not specified which geographical areas may be most vulnerable or the estimated number of potential infections. Users are advised to download applications only from official repositories to reduce the risk of encountering this malware.

In 2012, a novel bootkit targeting Mac OS X systems emerged, infiltrating the EFI firmware. A basic bootkit for Windows 8 also appeared, compromising the UEFI bootkit. By 2013, a more sophisticated UEFI bootkit named Dreamboat was introduced for Windows. The first documented real-world UEFI attack occurred in 2018 with the malware LoJax, linked to a Kremlin-backed hacking group. In 2020, the second known UEFI malware, MosaicRegressor, was discovered, which verified the presence of a malicious file upon each reboot. New UEFI bootkits like ESpecter, FinSpy, and MoonBounce have since emerged. In response to the threat of UEFI bootkits, Microsoft collaborated with manufacturers to implement Secure Boot, a protocol that uses cryptographic signatures to ensure the integrity of firmware during startup.
