A new Project Zomboid update could make multiplayer servers much more deadly

The upcoming update for Project Zomboid, build 42.17, will enhance the sandbox experience and multiplayer gameplay with various improvements. Players can choose any 'Exclusion Zone' town as their starting point in sandbox mode, although occupational spawns are limited to four 'canon' towns. The update introduces a new selection of VHS tapes for skill training, which can be found throughout the game world. Balancing adjustments include increased points for the Smoker and High Thirst traits, a reduced cost for the Nutritionist trait, and changes to how Chefs and Farmers function. Loot drop rates for 'other loot' have been increased, and vehicles in Apocalypse mode are more likely to contain fuel. Stendo's Firearms Emporium is being updated for better consistency in store loot. A prototype feature allowing players to enable sprinters in multiplayer has been introduced, adding urgency to gameplay. The Indie Stone is also working on improving controller support based on player feedback.

RedSun: Windows 0day when Defender becomes the attacker

A vulnerability has been discovered in Windows Defender that allows standard users to exploit a logic error in the file remediation process, enabling code execution with elevated privileges without administrative access. This flaw, identified by security researcher Chaotic Eclipse, occurs because Windows Defender does not verify if the restoration location of flagged files has been altered through a junction point. The exploit, named RedSun, takes advantage of a missing validation in the MpSvc.dll file, allowing attackers to redirect file restoration to the C:WindowsSystem32 directory. RedSun operates by chaining together four legitimate Windows features: Opportunistic Locks (OPLOCKs), Cloud Files API, Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), and Junction Points. The execution of the exploit involves monitoring shadow copies, triggering Defender's detection, synchronizing OPLOCKs, and ultimately writing malicious binaries to the System32 directory. The root cause is the lack of reparse point validation in the restoration process, and currently, no patch or CVE has been assigned for this vulnerability. It affects Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2019 and later, and organizations are advised to implement behavioral detection strategies until a fix is available.

Connecting .NET Lambda to Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL via RDS Proxy

Many organizations are modernizing legacy .NET applications while reducing database costs and enhancing scalability, particularly during migrations to AWS Lambda and transitions from SQL Server to Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition. The process involves connecting Lambda functions to Aurora PostgreSQL using Amazon RDS Proxy, with AWS Secrets Manager managing secure credential storage. The architecture includes a .NET Lambda function interfacing with Aurora PostgreSQL via RDS Proxy, which provides connection pooling to minimize database connection overhead. The solution requires a CloudFormation template to provision resources such as a VPC with private subnets, an Aurora PostgreSQL cluster, RDS Proxy, and Secrets Manager. The RDS Proxy is configured with parameters including PostgreSQL engine family, idle client connection timeout, and Secrets Manager secret. A Windows EC2 instance is provisioned, and access is facilitated through AWS Systems Manager Fleet Manager. The solution includes creating a sample table named "employee" in the database and a new .NET Lambda project that utilizes Npgsql for database connections. The Lambda function is deployed using the AWS CLI, and testing involves invoking the function and retrieving logs from Amazon CloudWatch. Finally, resources created during the process should be deleted to prevent ongoing charges.

Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 3 Introduces New Sulfur Spike Blocks

The Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 3 introduces Sulfur Spike blocks, which generate naturally on Sulfur blocks in the Sulfur Cave biomes. These blocks can form stalactites when placed on ceilings and stalagmites when placed on the ground. Players can combine two Sulfur Spikes to create elongated formations. Falling stalactites can damage players, and if there are no blocks above or below them, they will break and drop. Players can also break these spikes using a Minecraft Trident. Additionally, Potent Sulfur blocks can no longer be reverted back to Sulfur blocks, and the Sulfur Cube mob is no longer transportable via boats. Texture updates have been applied to several blocks, including Chiseled Cinnabar, Chiseled Sulfur, Cinnabar, Cinnabar Bricks, Polished Cinnabar, Polished Sulfur, and Sulfur Bricks.
