Google Gemini can now read your WhatsApp chats without you knowing – but you can stop it

Starting July 7, 2025, Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini, will automatically interact with third-party applications on Android devices, including Messages, WhatsApp, Utilities, and Phone applications. Users can expect Gemini to perform tasks such as sending messages, setting timers, and making phone calls with minimal input. These interactions will occur automatically, regardless of whether the Gemini Apps Activity setting is activated. Conversations will be logged in user accounts for up to 72 hours, even if users disable the Gemini Apps Activity. Google has informed Android users about these changes via email. Concerns regarding privacy have been raised, with Tuta, an encrypted email service, highlighting the lack of transparency from tech companies. Users can disable Gemini's interaction with apps through the Apps settings page or uninstall it entirely using developer tools. Future Android updates may introduce Gemini features to additional devices.

Cybersecurity alert: 10 Android apps spy on your conversations without your knowledge, remove them from your phone immediately

Recent findings have identified a cyberespionage campaign using Google Play to distribute malicious applications, with four apps on the Play Store and six through other channels. The campaign disguises itself as romantic outreach via messaging services like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. The malicious applications fall into three categories: 1. Standard Messaging Applications, which gather personal information and include the VajraSpy trojan. 2. Accessibility Exploiters, which use accessibility features to intercept communications and include the Wave Chat app that records calls and captures keystrokes. 3. News Medium Impersonators, which solicit phone numbers and can intercept contacts and sensitive documents. Twelve dangerous applications have been flagged: Rafaqat, Private Talk, MeetMe, Let’s Chat, Quick Chat, Chit Cat, YohooTalk, TikTok, Hello Cha, Nidus, GlowChat, and Wave Chat. The first six apps had over 1,400 downloads before removal. These applications use advanced techniques to bypass Android security protocols, allowing eavesdropping on communications. Users are advised to uninstall these apps immediately, exercise caution when downloading new applications, and regularly review app permissions and system updates to enhance security.

Copper golems and new copper equipment will be introduced in the upcoming Minecraft update, currently in testing for Bedrock and soon to be released as a Snapshot for Java. Players can create copper golems by placing a jack-o-lantern or carved pumpkin on a block of copper, which will then organize items in treasure chests. Copper will also become a legitimate equipment tier, with durability between stone and iron, allowing players to mine faster than with a stone pickaxe, but not unlocking additional materials. Copper is abundant in Minecraft's generated worlds, making it ideal for early-game use.

Austria wants to let police and prosecutors break into suspects’ messenger apps

Austrian authorities are planning to enhance surveillance capabilities, allowing prosecutors and police to monitor encrypted communications of suspects, primarily to combat terrorism. This initiative, proposed by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, is supported by public prosecutors and the federal criminal police, following a school shooting in Graz that claimed ten lives. The proposal includes a "federal trojan" software tool for monitoring social media and messaging platforms. Justice Minister Anna Sporrer stated there are no immediate plans for such an expansion, but future discussions may occur after a trial phase. Russia Launches National Messenger App with Government Integration | Ukraine news

On June 24, Vladimir Putin established a "national messenger" in Russia through a decree, which was published on the official legal information portal. It is designed for messaging and voice calls in Russian and other languages spoken in the Russian Federation, and will support advertising in these languages. The State Duma passed a bill advocating for the messenger on June 10, emphasizing the need for a multifunctional information exchange service. Anton Gorelkin stated that the introduction of the messenger would not block Telegram in Russia if it complies with legal requirements. Russia has imposed restrictions on social networks and messaging platforms, including limiting access to X (formerly Twitter) in 2021 and banning Facebook and Instagram in March 2022. In August 2024, Roskomnadzor blocked the Signal messenger for violations of Russian legislation.
